Family Medicine Teaching Centre Established A F am i ly M e d i c i ne Teachin g Centre wa s f o r ma l ly established at the general practice clinic of Yan Ch a i H o s p i t a l f o l l o w i ng the s i g n i n g of a m e m o r a n d u m b e t w e e n the C U H K D e p a r t m e n t of C o m m u n i t y a n d Fam i ly Medicin e and Yan Ch ai Ho s p i t al on 22nd January 1998. The centre, w h i ch starte d p i l ot operatio n i n early 1997, is the firs t f am i l y me d i c i ne teaching centre set u p j o i n t l y b y a u n i v e r s i t y and a district hospital in H o n g Kong. Twenty - four medical students f r o m C U have been attached to the centre fo r clinical sessions, and other students hav e visited the centre to learn the organization an d management o f f am i ly medicine practice. Besides p r o v i d i ng trainings the centre w i l l w o r k t o w a r d s e n h a n c i ng p r e v e n t i ve h e a l t h car e a n d p r o m o t i n g h e a l t h care e d u c a t i o n. Staf f of t he D e p a r t m e n t of C ommu n i ty an d Family Medicine w i l l help develop family medicine and design training programmes for hospital staff. There w i l l also be research collaboration between the t w o parties, especially in the areas of health service provision, epidemiology, an d public health. Eye Care Centre Set up in Beijing The Un i v e r s i t y signed a bilateral agreement w i t h Beijing Me d i c a l Un i v e r s i t y to set u p an advanced Join t Eye Care Centre i n Beijing to p r o v i d e b e t t er eye care f o r t h e v i s u a l l y i mp a i r ed i n China a nd t o conduct research and training i n the visual sciences. The agreement was signed by Prof. Joseph C.K. Lee, dean of medicine, and Prof .Wang De Bing, president of Beijing Medical University. There are currently nine m i l l i o n people w i t h v i s u a l i mp a i rme n ts i n China (of w h o m f o u r m i l l i o n are b l i n d ) and 400,000 n e w cases each year. Prof. Arthur K.C. The Shanghai Institute of Me t a l l u r gy was represented b y Profs. Z o u Shichang and Yu Y u e h u i w h i l e th e M a t e r i a ls T e c h n o l o g y Research Centre was represented b y Profs. Ian W i l s on a nd S.R. Wong.
