Thanks to the generous s u p p o r t of the H u i Yeung Shin g Memo r i a l F o u n d a t i o n a n d T h e H o n g k o n g B a n k F o u n d a t i o n , m o r e students w i l l be able to participat e i n the p r o g r amme thi s year. Last year, some 170 participants were sponsore d to take courses i n contemporary China a n d to experience the wo r k p l a ce culture i n ma i n l a nd cities. The p r o g r amme comprises a f o u r - we e k t r a i n i ng course i n the c o n t emp o r a r y sociopolitical a n d e c o n o m i c s y s t em s of t h e ma i n l a n d for first-year students, a nd a six w e e k i n t e r n s h ip s c h em e f o r f i n a l - y e a r s t u d e n ts w h i c h p l a c e s t h e m i n p u b l i c o r g a n i z a t i o n s or b r a n ch office s of H o n g Kong-based companies o n the ma i n l a n d . S t u d e nt E x c h a n g e A c t i v i t i e s Chung Chi Students Learn About Shanghais Education System A s t u d e n t d e l e g a t i o n f r o m C h u n g C h i College p a id a 10-day visit t o Shanghai f r om 2 7 t h D e c emb e r 1997 to s t u d y the c i t y 's education system a n d its development. D u r i n g the v i s i t, th e 10 C h u n g C h i students discussed w i t h their counterparts in F u d an Un i v e r s i ty educational policies a n d d e v e l o pme n t i n H o n g K o n g a nd Shanghai. They also conducted research i n small groups a n d visited educational organizations a nd g o v e r nme n t departments i n Shanghai. O r g a n i z e d u n d e r the auspices of th e college's student visitor programme, the visit w a s s p o n s o r ed b y the U n i t e d B o a rd f o r Christian H i g h er Education i n Asia. New Asia-Yale Student Exchange Eight N e w Asia students spent t w o weeks i n the US exploring gender issue s under the f i f t h N e w Asia-Yale Un i v e r s i t y Student Exchang e Programme. Between 24th January a nd 7t h February 1998, t h e y p r e s e n t e d p a p e rs o n s e x u a l d i s c r i m i n a t i on a n d h a r a s s m e n t at a s y m p o s i u m h e l d at Yale U n i v e r s i t y a n d e x c h a n g ed v i e w s w i t h d i f f e r e nt s t u d e n t g r o u p s . T h e y a l s o v i s i t e d r e l e v a n t o r g a n i z a t i o n s s u c h as t he P e r m a n e nt C omm i s s i on o n the States of Wo m e n a n d Planned Parenthood, and toured the cities of N e w York a n d Washington DC. Eight Yale students r e t u r n ed the visit f r o m 8th to 21st Ma r c h 1998. They presented papers on gender issues i n the US a n d p a i d a t wo - d ay visi t to Guangzhou. Prof. Arthur K.C.
