The e x h i b i t i o n featured 139 exquisite snuff bottles, all of w h i c h were once i n the p o s s e s s i on of th e Q i n g emp e r o r s , t h e i r entourage, and court officials. Some 80 piece s bear i mp e r i a l poems, i mp e r i al a n d private crests, n ames of p a l a c e s , a n d o t h e r emblematic inscriptions, a nd are especially useful for the accurate datin g of comparative pieces i n the study o f snuff bottles. ' T h e D a w n of Chinese C i v i l i z a t i o n , Jades of the L i a n g z hu Cu l t u r e ' , j o i n t l y organized w i t h th e L i a n g z h u Cu l t u re M u s e u m, w as h e ld f r o m 7th Ma r ch to 24th M a y 1998. Jadecong,neolithic period L i a n g z hu is a smal l t o w n i n the v i c i n i t y of Yuhang C i t y i n Zhejiang Province, where thousands of relics have been excavated f r o m m a n y archaeological sites. These relic s are remnants of th e L i a n g z hu culture, one o f the mo s t i m p o r t a nt n e o l i t h ic c u l t u r es a l o n g l ower Yangtze about 4,000 to 5,300 years ago. One major characteristic of the L i a n g z hu culture is the magnificence of it s jade artifacts. I n terms of quality, q u a n t i t y, variety, a nd t e c h n i c a l e x c e l l e n c e , L i a n g z h u j a d e s represent the height of the jade i n d u s t ry i n prehistory China a n d the entire Pacific rim. The 96 items o n display i n c l u d e d cong- tubes, bi-discs, yue-axes, an d various types of pendants and ornaments, m a n y of w h i c h are exquisitely decorated w i t h the h a l l ma r k mo t i f of L i a n g z h u jades — a my t h i c al half- h u m a n half-beast mask.
