L i K o o n C h u n w as a gesture of g r a t i t u de of the U n i v e r s i ty t o w a r d s Dr. the H o n o u r a b l e S i m o n L i , G B M , w h o p l e d g e d a g e n e r o u s d o n a t i on to s u p p o r t the U n i v e r s i t y 's staff a n d s t u d e nt d e v e l o pme n t p r o g r amme s a nd academic exchange activities, a n d to i mp r o ve facilities o n campus. M r . L i K o o n C h u n wa s the late father of Dr. L i a n d w a s p r o m i n e nt i n rice trade, the s h i p p i ng business, a n d real estate development i n H o n g K o n g before the Second Wo r l d War. H e w a s also a f o u n d e r of the B a n k of East A s i a , a J u s t i ce o f t h e Peace, a n d a director of the T u ng Wa h G r o up of Hospitals a n d of Po L e u n g K u k . A t t h e o p e n i n g c e r e m o n y , v i c e - chancellor o f the U n i v e r s i t y Prof. A r t h u r K. C. L i t h a n k e d Dr. S i mo n L i for his generosity a n d expressed h i s a p p r e c i a t i on of D r . L i ' s c o n t r i b u t i o n to education. Participants h a d to compet e u s i ng checker- p l a y i n g c omp u t er p r o g r ams t h e y d e s i g n ed p r i or to the c omp e t i t i on f o l l o w i n g guidelines issued b y the A C M . T he g am e w as p l a y ed o n a s i x - p o i nt s t a r - s h a p e d b o a r d b e t w e en t w o players at opposite corners of the board. T he o b j e c t i v e is to m o v e a l l one's ma r b l e s a c r o s s t h e c h e ss b o a r d t o o c c u p y t h e o p p o n e n t ' s h ome area. T h e c o m p e t i t i o n f o l l o w e d a d o u b l e r o u n d - r o b i n f o r ma t w h i c h meant each player h a d to face the same o p p o n e nt twice, t a k i n g t u r n s t o s t a r t t h e g a m e . F o u r o t h e r c o m p e t i t o r s c ame f r o m t h e U n i v e r s i ty of M a c a u a n d the H o n g K o n g U n i v e r s i ty of Science a n d T e c h n o l o g y .
