been a pioneer in the development o f sports medicine and sports science in Hong Kong. Upon the establishment of the Hong Kong Centre for Sports Medicine and Sports Science in 1983, it set up the first Sports Injuries Clini c at its teaching hospital, which ha s since treated 7,000 new cases. In 1985 it set up the first Sports Medicine Clinic at the Hong Kong Sports I n s t i t u t e , p r o v i d i n g comp r ehens i ve medical care and engaging in applied sports science research. And ever since the centre was designated as a partner in sports medicine and health promotion b y WH O i n late 1996 , i t has been strengthening ties w i th the mainland and fostering a new culture o f active living in the local community . In line with WHO'S goal of ‘Health for A l l Mankind in 2000', it has been promoting new concepts of health and creating the life o f quality. Prof. Chan said that the centre has the blessing o f the Faculty of Medicine i n all its endeavours. Its primary work, moreover, has been identified as an area of excellence by the University for p r i o r i t y development. Such developmen t include coordinating interdisciplinary research i n sports medicine and health promotion, nurturing expertise in sports medicine through postgraduate training, providing clinical services to the community for the better management and prevention of sports injuries, and setting up a Sports Medicine Resource Centr e for Asia.
