Using Biotechnology to Feed, Cure,and Improve Life The University Grants Committee (UGC) announced the results of the first round of the Area of Excellence (AoE) scheme on 20th September 1999. Three projects from all local tertiary institutions were selected for funding support for long- term development with the aim of achieving an international standard of excellence. One of these is ‘Plant and Fungal Biotechnology ’ coordinated by Prof. Samuel S. M. Sun of the Department of Biology , which has been awarded HK$38.8 million. The project employs state-of-the-art genetic engineering and related tec h nology to improve the quantity and quality of food and health products to meet the needs of Hong Kong, mainland China, and other parts of the world.
