HK$81.7 Million from the RGC for Research 1999-2000 A total of 141 research proposals submitted by academic and research staff of the University have been awarded competitiv e earmarked grant s to the tune of HK$81.7 m i l l i on f r om the Research Grant s Council (RGC) i n 1999. The number of proposals supported is the highest among all local tertiary institutions. The Universit y also received a direct allocation of HK$16.7 m i l l i on to finance small projects. For 1999-2000, the government has made available HK$324 mi l l i on i n the f o r m of competitive earmarked grants i n suppo r t of selected research proposals submitted b y academic and research personnel i n the UGC- f unde d institutions, HK$70 m i l l i on for direc t allocation to the institutions to finance small projects, and HK$17.5 m i l l i o n to support new initiatives aimed at encouraging group research and strengthening the research base of these institutions. The 141 C U HK projects selected fo r support fall into fou r subject disciplines: biology and medicine (45); engineering (40); physical sciences (13); and the humanities, social sciences and business studies (43).
