Awards for Staff and Alumni Book Award for Sociologist The book Gender and the South China Miracle, w r i t t e n b y Prof. Lee C h i n g - k w a n of the Department of Sociology, has w o n this year's Outstanding Book Aw a rd of the American Sociological Association (Asi a and As i a n Americans Section). Distinguished Young Scientist Award • Dr. Chen Xiao M i n g , an alumnu s of the University, w o n the 1999 Distinguished Yo u n g Scientist A w a r d of the Q i u Shi Science and Technologies Foundation i n China. He studied for his Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Ma k of the Chemistry Department f r om 1989 to 1992. He is currently professor and associate dean of the Schoo l of Ch em i s t r y a nd Ch em i c a l E n g i n e e r i ng a t Z h o n g s h a n University. • Dr. Ronald CC , Wang, a graduate of the Un i v e r s i t y, has bee n awa r d e d a postdoctoral scholarship f r om D A A D , the German Academic Exchange Service. The first Ho ng Kon g student to have w o n the a w a r d . D r . W a n g completed his Ph.D. studies i n Obstetric s and Gynaecology at t h e U n i v e r s i t y i n F e b r u a ry 1998. H e t h e n j o i n e d t h e Biosciences Special Programme at the Institute of Biochemistry at Germany's Humb o l d t University f r om Ma y to Au g u s t 1999 as a v i s i t i ng postdoctoral fellow. Professorial Appointments Professor of Chinese Medicine Prof. K o n g Yu n Ch e u n g h a s b e e n a p p o i n t e d p r o f e s s o r o f C h i n e se medicine f r om 1st August 1999. Prof. K o n g obtained his doctoral degree f r om The Free Universit y of Brussels i n 1965, and has hel d various research fellowships and v i s i t i n g professorships i n i ns t i t u t i on s i n Europe, the US, and ma i n l a nd China. He joined The Chinese Universit y as lecturer i n biology i n 1968, becoming senior lecturer i n biochemistry i n 1974, reader i n 1979, and professor of biochemistry i n 1989. He was appointed director of studies of the Bachelor of Chinese Medicin e Programme f r om 1997 to 1998 and director of the School of Chinese Medicine i n February 1999. Prof. Kong's current research interests are active principles i n Chinese medicines, e n d o c r i n o l o gy of r e p r o d u c t i o n, n a t u r a l product immunomodulators, protein growth factors, and the history of Chinese science and medicine. Professor of Anatomy Prof. D a v i d T. Yew has been appointed professor of a n a t o my f r o m 1st August 1999. Prof. Yew obtained his B.Sc. f r om The Chinese Un i v e r s i ty i n 1969 and his Ph.D. from Wayne State University i n 1974. He also obtained a D.Sc. and a Dr.Med.(habil) f r om Un i v e r s i t ä t der Rostock i n 1988 and 1995 N e ws in Brief 51
