Prof. Wu specializes in using various scattering and optical techniques to study the properties of macromolecules, po l ymer networks and colloids. He has published extensively i n r epu t ab le i n t e r n a t i o n al journals. Recently, due to his scientific c o n t r i b u t i on to the s t u d y of s i n g le homopo l ymer chains i n solution, he has been elected as Fellow of American Physical Society. CUHK and HKUST Formalize Academic Partnership Prof. Arthur Li (left) and Prof. Chia-wei Woo (right) A n agreement on academic partnership was signed by vice-chancellor of The Chinese Un i v e r s i t y, Prof. A r t h u r K.C. L i , and president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Prof. Chia-wei Woo, on 28th September 1999. W i t h the a im of establishing closer linkages w i t h each other so as to be able to make greater c o n t r i b u t i o ns to t e r t i a ry education, the two universities formed the alliance which allows students to enrol in the other party's courses, and which encourages staff and departments to conduct j o i nt research, organize j o i nt seminars and conferences, and share academic resources. A NEW Supercomputer to Support Data-intensive Research In order to accommodate the ever increasing volume of data intensive research work at the University, the Computer Services Centre/ I n f o r ma t i on Techno l ogy Service U n i t recently installed another high performance supercomputer, a Sun Enterprise 6500. With ten 336MHz UltraSparc CPUs, four gigabytes of memory, and more than 240 gigabytes of usable disk storage, it can perform high- speed data retrieval as well as data mining and data analysis. The Sun Enterprise 6500 is suited for use i n data-intensive research requiring h i gh c o m p u t i ng p o w e r to d r aw f o c u s s ed information and classification f r om large pools of raw data.
