Visiting Scholars • Prof. Robert P.H. Chang, director of the Materials Research Cente r at Northwestern University in the US, visited Ch u n g Ch i College as its Siu Lien L i n g Wong Visitin g Fellow 1999-2000 from 16th to 28th January 2000. During his visit, Prof, Chang addressed students and staff, and participated in Chung Chi's annual education conference. • P r o f . E l mar Ho l e n s t e i n, p r o f e s s or o f philosophy at the Swiss Federal Institute of T e c h n o l o gy i n Z u r i c h , v i s i t e d t he Department of Philosophy from 8th to 15th February 2000 under the M i n g Y u Visiting Scholars Programme o f New Asia College. Prof. Holenstein delivered tw o lectures o n T h e Cultural History of Huma n i t y: The Con c ep t i on o f Hegel (1831), o f Jaspers (1949), and the Contemporary Conception (2000)' and the philosophical significance of Sigmund Freud. • Prof. Tom McA r t h ur o f Exeter University in the U K visited the University under the 1999-2000 D i s t i n g u i s h ed H uma n i t i es Professorship Scheme and gave a publi c lecture on 'Describing the World of English' on 18th February 2000. • Prof. Ferid Mu r ad , 1998 Nobel laureate in physiology and medicine , delivered a lecture entitled 'Cellular Signaling wit h Nitric Oxide and Cyclic GMP' on 15th Ma r c h 2000. CUHK Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma Installed The Chinese University of Hong Ko n g Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma wa s installed o n 18th Ma r c h 2000. Beta Gamma Sigma is an international honour society based i n the US that recognizes outstanding academic achievements of students e n r o l l e d i n c o l l e g i a te b u s i n e s s a n d management programmes accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business — I n t e r na t i onal Association for Management Education ( AACSB - I AME ). Its mission is to honour academic achievement in the study o f business, and personal and professional excellence in the practice o f business, to foster an enduring commitment to the principles and value s o f h o n o u r and integrity, to encourage the pursuit of wisdom, earnestness, and lifelong learning, an d to support the advancement of business thought. Its current membership of400,000 comprises the brightest and best of business leaders. A t the installation ceremony of the chapter, M r . Allen Lee Peng-fei, chairman o f Pacific Dimensions Consultants Ltd., and M r . Gilbert Y . Chow, director of Customer Service for Asia, Northwest Airlines, were made chapter honorees. A n d Prof. Michael Hu i , associate dean (undergraduate studies) of the Faculty of Business Administration, and Ms. Carmen Yip, BBA student at the University, were inducted respectively as president and vice-president of the C U H K Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the first chapter outside No r t h America. A total of 131 student candidates and 13 faculty members were also inducted into its membership.
