Monitoring of Indoor Air Quality andWaterQuality The health and safet y of all staff and students is an issue of major concern. To improve indoor air quality, particularly i n the ma ny science laboratories, new and replacement chemical fume cabinets have been installed over the last few years. The quality of potable water, cooling water , water in the University' s swimming pool and the Weiyuan Lake will continue to be closely monitored. Drainage and sewage systems will be vigilantly inspected. W a s t e Management The University calls on its memb e rs to reduce waste by 20 per cen t by the en d of 2007, and has striven to improve waste collectio n and recycling arrangements, such as the use of colour coded recycle bins for segregating waste, and the systematic collection of old clothing, books, toys, and electrical appliances for charity. The quantity of waste pape r and aluminium cans collected and recycled has been on a steady increase. To reduce risk as muc h as possible, a n ew r ad i oa c t i ve wa s te decay store a n d 48 n ew dangerous goods stores wer e set up recently for the safe s t o r a g e of p o t e n t i a l l y d a n g e r o us chemicals. Just in 1999-2000 alone, the University Safety Office managed the disposal of over 20,000 litres of chemical waste an d 17 tons of biological waste, and held in safe storage significan t quantities of decaying radioactiv e waste.
