Clean and hygienic canteens Implementation of Energy Conservation Measures In July 1999, a n Energy Conservation Working Grou p was set up to conduct energy audits o f specified buildings o n campus in order to gauge the efficiency of energy use, and to identify area s for conservation an d cost savings. Air-cooled air-conditioning systems will gradually be replaced by water-cooled systems to improve energy efficienc y by 30 per cent. Lighting systems will also be retrofitted to reduce lighting loads by at least 15 per cent over two years. The University has an overall energy conservation plan to reduce energy consumption by 20 per cen t by 2005. Scrutiny of Construction a n dRenovationProjects There are over 120 construction sites o n c ampu s and a t the Prince o fWales Hospital. Contractors have been asked to comply wit h all environmental regulations and legislation, and t o prepare environmenta l managemen t plans to preempt problems. Frequent site inspections are also conducted b y University staff to monitor the impact o fconstruction activities o n the campus environment. The Un i v e r s i ty h a s i n t r o d u c ed n ew techniques t o b e a u t i f y artificial slopes, an d devised policies and guidelines to preserve the natural landscape an d expand green space. The campus is home to many rare species of bird s and animals. I fresources permit, large-scale surveys of t h e flora a n d f a u n a o n c amp us wi l l be conducted and consideration will b e given to making certain parts of the University a natural science education trail.
