News in Brief University Members Honoured • Five members of the University were on t he y e ar 2000 H o n o u rs List announced b y the government of the Ho ng Kong Special Administrative Region on 1st July 2000. o Prof. Jao Tsung I, Wei Lun Honorar y Professor, was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Meda l for his lifelong and distinguished contribution t o th e s t u d y o f Ch i n e se c u l t u re a n d o u t s t a n d i ng a c h i e v eme n ts as a calligrapher, pa i n t e r, poe t , a n d essayist. o Dr. Lee Hon-chiu, chairman o fthe University Council, was awarded the Go ld Ba uh i n i a Star f o rh i s s i gn i f i c a n t c o n t r i b u t i o n to t h e development of the securities and futures markets. o Prof. Arthur K.C. Li, vice-chancellor, was awarde d th eGold Bauhinia Star for his significant contribution to t he d e v e l o pme nt o f t e r t i a ry education and the medical sector, o Prof. Lee Shiu-hung, director of the School of Pub l ic He a l t h , wa s awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star for his distinguished and dedicated contribution t o the promotion of public health in Hong Kong. o Prof. Daniel Shek of the Department of Social Work was awa r d e d the Bronze Bauhinia Star for exemplary community service, in particular his contribution t o anti-narcotics an d youth work. • Prof. Fan J i a nq i ng, p r o f e s s o r of statistics, wa s r e c i p i e nt of t h e Presidents' Award of the Committee of P r e s i d e n ts o f Statistical Societies (COPSS) for the year 2000. The award, to h o n o u r o u t s t a n d i n g statistics researchers u n d e r 40, is t h e mo st prestigious one i n th e international statistics community, especially among researchers.
