Professor of Statistics Prof. Fan Jianqing has been appointed professor of statistics from 28th April 2000. Prof. Fan obtained his BS in mathematics from Fudan University in 1982, his MA in statistics from Academia Sinica in Beijing in 1985, and his Ph.D. in statistics f r om the Un i ve r s i t y of California at Berkeley in 1989. He had taught at UC Berkeley , the University of North Carolin a at Chapel Hill, and UCLA in the United States. He joined The Chinese University as senior lecturer in 1995 and was p r omo t ed to reader rank in 1996. Prof. Fan is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and a member of the International Statistical Institute, the America Statistics Association, and the I n t e r n a t i on al Ch i ne se Statistical Association. His research interests include statistical me t h o d s in f i n a n c e, h i gh dimensional data analysis, generalized linear models, and data analytic modelling. Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Prof. Franklin Luk Tai-cheung has been appointed professor of computer science and engineering from 10th July 2000. Prof. Luk obtained his BS in ma t h ema t i c s f r om Ca l i f o r n ia I n s t i t u te of Technology in 1972, and his MS in statistics and Ph.D. i n c omp u t er science f r om Stanford University in 1974 and 1978 respectively. He taught at Cornell University from 1978 to 1992, first as assistant professor of computer science, then as associat e professor of electrical engineering and professor of electrical engineering. From 1992 to 2000 he wa s p r o f e s s or a nd c h a i r ma n of c omp u t er science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. H e has also b e en c o n s u l t a nt t o Lu c e nt Technologies since 1998, and t o General Electric's Co r p o r a te Re s e a r ch a nd De v e l opme nt Center since 1997. His r e s e a r ch i n t e r e s ts i n c l u de scientific computation with an emphasis on linear algebra, and signal an d image processing. Prof. Luk serves on the ed i t o r i al b o a r ds of Applied Numerical Mathematics a n d Integration, the VLSI Journal. Professor of Architecture Prof. Essy Baniassad has been appointed professor of architecture from 4th August 2000. Prof. Baniassad obtained his B.Arch, from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1962, and his MA and Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in 1967 and 1978 respectively. He was lecturer in architecture at the University of Manchester from 1968 to 1979, associate p r o f e s s or at the Technical University of Nova Scotia from 1979 to 1981, and professor and dean of the Faculty o f Architecture at Dalhousie University from 1981 to 1994. Prior to joining The Chinese University, h e was professor in the Faculty of Architecture of Dalhousie University. Prof. Baniassad is also chancellor of th e College of Fellows, Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, a practising member of the No va Scotia As s oc i a t i on of Architects, and an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
