Sponsored by the Un i v e r s i t y Grants Committee, th e contest comprised three matches, conducted in Cantonese, English, and putonghua respectively. Following the success o f the Cantonese debating team on 17th February 2001 , the University's English debating team defeated their counterparts from the University of Hong Ko n g a week later on 24th February at the Rayson Huang Theatre o f the University of Hong Kong. While the H K U team managed to seize a victory at the final, putonghua contest on 4th March, the overall champion for the year went to The Chinese University team. Medical Students W i n Occupational Safety Awards Postgraduate students from the Department of Community and Family Medicine clinched two out of five awards of the Occupational Safety and Health Best Project Award, set up for the first time by the Occupational Safety and Health Council to encourage post-secondary students i n Hong Ko n g to appreciate the importance o f occupational safety and health i n thei r studies. The prize presentation ceremony took place on 24th September 2000 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The award w i nn i ng projects f r om the Un i v e r s i ty were ‘Th e Neu r obeha v i ou r a l Effects of Occupational Exposure to Organic Solvents i n Hong Kong Printing Workers' by Mr. Song Hong, and 'Heat Stress Among Chefs in the Kitchens of Chinese Restaurants in Hong Kong and the Related Physical Symptoms' by Mr. Leung Wai Hung. They each received an awa r d c e r t i f i c a t e and a cash p r i z e o f HK$3,000. CUHK Team Wins Automobile Project Award A team from the Smart Materials and Structures Laboratory of the Department of Automation and Computer-aided Engineering has won the Gold Award in the Best Automobile Project of the Year 2000 competition organized by the Institute of the Moto r Industry Hong Kong ( I M I HK). The team members are Prof. Liao Wei Hsin (m i dd l e ) and his two postgraduate students Mr. Lam Hiu-fung (left) and Mr. Lai Chun-yu ( r i g h t ) . The objective of the project was to develop novel car suspension systems to improve passenger comfort and safety. The CUHK team developed and implemented a car suspension system w i t h a magneto-rheological f l u id damper which was shown to substantially reduce the vertical acceleration o f the main mass. The awards presentation ceremony took place on 26th October 2000 at the annual general meeting of the IMI. The team received a trophy as well as certificates for each of its members.
