The lecture was organized by the Faculty o f Education and the Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research. • Mr. John Battle, MP, British Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister, delivered a p u b l ic lecture e n t i t l e d ' T he Wo r ld Environment: Where Do We Go from Here?' on 14th March 2001 during his visit to the University. Visiting Scholars • Prof. X u Yuanchong, professo r of literary translation o f the Department of English , Peking Un i v e r s i t y , delivered a lecture e n t i t l e d ' C u l t u r a l Exchange and the Globalization of Poetry' on 13th October 2000 in his capacity as Wilson T.S. Wang- New Method College Visitin g Professor i n Language Education. • P r o f . K e n n e th A . D o d g e , W i l l i a m McDo u g a ll Professor of Public Po l i c y Studies and Director of the Center for Child and Family Policy of Duke University in the US, visited United College from 12th to 17th November 2000 as its Distinguished Visiting Scholar. Du r i ng his visit, Prof. Dodge d e l i v e r e d t wo p u b l ic lectures: ‘ H o w Aggressive Behaviour Develops in Children and Adolescents' on 14th November, and ‘The Prevention of Chronic Violence i n Adolescents,on 16th November. • Prof. Paul Vanhoutte, professor of medicine , physiology, and pharmacology, and vice- president for research and development at the Institut de Recherches Internationales Servier, France, visited United College from 4th to 10th March 2001 as Distinguished Visiting Scholar in 2000-1. He delivered two public lectures entitled respectively 'From Gas to Intercellular Message: Nitric Oxide' (6th March) and ' D r ug Discovery: The Ultimate Pharmacological Challenge' (8th March). • Prof. Shuichi Kato, renowned literary critic and medical doctor, delivered a publi c lecture entitled 'Japanese Conversionary Culture’ under the Distinguishe d Humanities Professorship Scheme 2 0 0 0 -1 on 12th March 2001. • Prof. Tommy Koh, ambassador-at-large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, visited Shaw College as the 2000-1 Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar, and delivered a public lecture on 'Asia and Europe i n the New Wo r l d o f the 21st Century' on 21st March 2001. School Self-renewal Project Begins Ten primary and ten secondary schools in the territory participate i n the School Self- evaluation and School-based Performance Indicators project undertaken by the Faculty of Education to help them develop their ow n models of school-based management and to set Chinese University Bulletin Spring • Summer 2001 58
