Understanding University Education and Campus Life What is the major difference b e t we e n u n i v e r s i t y and secondary education ? Un i v e r s i ty Registrar Prof. R i cha r d H o said, 'Generally speaking u n i v e r s i t y students enjoy m u c h mo r e personal space a n d f r e e d om i n the p u r s u it of k n ow l e d g e . The y are also expected to be able to t h i nk independently. Bu t i n H o n g K o n g , our y o u n g people ma y have bee n mo r e accustomed to k n ow l e d g e acquisition t h a n to i n d e p e n d e n t t h i n k i n g wh i l e at school. Once they enter university, t hey cannot a f f o r d n ot to deve l op the faculty of critical t h i n k i n g . ' H e f u r t her p o i n t ed o u t that un i v e r s i ty graduates can con t r i bu t e mo re to society if they have a b r o a d k n ow l e d g e base and are we l l - r o u n d e d i n their deve l opmen t. One w a y of n u r t u r i ng such graduate s is t h r o u g h general educa t i on courses, w h i c h is a u n i q ue featur e of The Chinese Un i v e r s i t y ' s u n d e r g r a d u a t e p r o g r amme . Prof. H o believes that if these concept s are i ns t i l l e d i n secondary schoo l students early enough, t hey w i l l be better p r epa r ed for an e n v i r o nme nt that emphasizes b o t hknowledgea n d i n d e p e n d e nt t h i n k i n g . A n d to deepen students' u n d e r s t a n d i ng of the Un i v e r s i t y an d u n i v e r s i ty education, a w i d e range o f activities are o r gan i ze d each year b y the Un i v e r s i ty adm i n i s t r a t i on, the colleges, the faculties a n d their departments. 3
