Geography Student Wins Best Paper Award M r . Shan Y i n, a Ph.D. s t udent o f t he Department of Geography, won the Young Author Best Paper Awa r d at the 3rd ISPRS W o r k s h op o n D y n a m i c a n d M u l t i - Dimensional GIS that was held at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, from 23rd to 25th May 2001. Mr . Shan's paper was entitled ' M i n i n g Sequential Pattern f r om GeoSpatial Data'. Mr. Shan is also a research assistant o ft he Joint L a b o r a t o r y f o r Geoinformation Science (JLGIS) established b y the Chinese Academy of Sciences and The Chinese University. Accounting Student Wins Prestigious Scholarship M i s s Le e K w an T u n g , a f i r s t - y e ar accounting student at the University, was a w a r d e d t h e f i r s t S a n f o r d Y u n g Scholarship. The Sanford Yung Scholars Programme for Excellence i n Accounting Studies was established earlier this year b y Mr. Sanford Yung, former chairman of Coopers & L y b r a n d H o n g K o n g ( now r enamed PricewaterhouseCoopers). I t provides one scholarship each year to the most outstanding first-year accounting student f r o m a local university. The awardee w i l l receive a cash award of HK$200,000 to cover all expenses i n his / her r ema i n i ng t wo years of un i v e r s i ty studies. A n d u p o n c omp l e t i o n o ft he second-year programme , the awardee w i l l be sent t o N e w Yo r k or another commercially comparable city for an eight- week summer placement at one of the Big F i v e f i r ms , w i t h r e t u r n a i r passage p r o v i d e d plus HK$30,000 f or personal expenses. A t o t al o f23 first-year ac coun t i ng students were recommended by six local universities for the 2001 award. CU Rowing Team Clinches Championship Trophy The vice-chancellor [right I) and the CUHK rowing team Following their success at the Ho n g Kong Universities Rowing Championshi p held o n 9 t h September 2001, t he Chinese University r ow i n g team again outshone their opponents f r om the Un i ve r s i t y o f H o n g K o n g i n t h e 15th I n t e r v a r s i t y R o w i n g Ch amp i o n s h i p h e l d o n23 rd September o n Shing M u n R i ve r. The CUHK team came out of the six races w i t h four go ld trophies, one silver, an d one bronze. I n the focus event o fthe day — the men's coxed eight race, they beat the H K U team b y t wo boats t oc l i nch th e championship title for the tenth time i n 15 years. The boat became the first i n the history o£ the CUHK r ow i n g team to have w o n b o t h t he I n t e r v a r s i ty R o w i n g C h a m p i o n s h i p a n d t h eH o n g K o n g Universities Rowing Championship i n the same year.
