Lectures Wei Lun Lecture • Prof. Yuan Longping, academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the China National Hy b r id Rice Research and Development Centre, spoke on 'Current Status and Future Prospects of Hybrid Rice i n China' on 3rd July 2001. Other Lectures • Prof. Joel D. Cooper, Evarts A. Graham Professor of Surgery and chairman of cardiothoracic surgery at Washington Un i ve r s i ty School of Med i c i n e at St. Louis, Missouri, gave a talk on 'Surgery for Emphysema' o n 27th Ap r i l 2001. • Mr. Chen Songchang, deputy director and research associate of the H u n a n Provincial Mu s e um , spoke on ' Go l d and Silver Ware Excavated fro m Hunan Province' on 25th September 2001. • Mr. X u Zhongling, research fello w of the A r t Museum and former head of the Painting and Calligraphy Un i t of the Palace Museum, spoke on 'Flower and B i r d Painting o f the M i n g an d Q i ng Periods' o n 20th October 2001. Visiting Scholar • Prof. Thomas T. Chen, professor i n the De p a r t me nt o f Ce ll a n d Mo l e c u l ar B i o l o g y a n d d i r e c t o r o f t h e Biotechnology Centre at the University of Connecticut i n the US, visited the University unde r the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Visiting Professorship Scheme 2000-1. Prof . Chen delivered a l e c t u re e n t i t l e d ' C o n t r i b u t i o n s of Mo d e r n Biology to Aqua c u l t u r e ' o n 14th June 2001.
