Anatomy Summer Courses The De p a r t me nt of A n a t o my has been r u n n i ng s ummer courses i n h u m a n a n a t omy and neuroanatomy every July for y o u ng anatomy teachers f r om the ma i n l a nd for four years. Taught b y w e l l - k n o w n local and internationa l anatomists, the courses have benefited some 90 trainees. 'The aimof the course is to strengthen the teaching skills of young anatomyteachersfrom themainland,especialklythose from remote regions who have little opportunity to go abroad,' says Prof.DavidYew,chairofthedepartment. The former consists of w a r d visiting , seeing p a t i e n t s , a n d s u r g e r y, a n d t h e l a t t er i n v o l v e s p a r t i c i p a t i ng i n research projects. The fellows come f r om hospitals a nd universities all over Ch i na a n d s p e n d a m o n t h to a yea r i n H o n g K o n g . O v er 80 ma i n l a nd scholars have been trained since 1987, ma n y of w h o m have n ow become directors o f hospitals, deans of medical schools, or heads of orthopaedics centres. I n 1994, t he d e p a r t m e nt h e l p ed e s t a b l i sh t he Chinese Speaking Orthopaedic Society , w i t h Prof . K. M . Chan, professo r of orthopaedics and traumatology at the Un i v e r s i t y, as secretary. Memb e rs are d r a w n f r o m Chinese orthopaedists a nd scholars f r om H o n g Ko n g , ma i n l a nd China, Taiwan, a nd N o r t h Ame r i c a. Since 1997, the society has trained over 700 ma i n l a nd d o c t o r s at i t s A d v a n c e d C o u r s e f o r C h i n e s e Orthopaedists a nd its s ummer seminars. The society also sponsors ma i n l a nd doctors to enrol i n t r a i n i n g i n H o n g K o n g u s i ng the C U H K O r t h o p a e d ic L e a r n i ng Centre as its base.
