Educational and Emotional Needs of Gifted S t uden ts in Hong Kong There is an increasing awareness that gifted children have much potential that remains untapped. It is only by giving t h em an educatio n that is commensurate with their abilities that such potential ca n be more fully developed. Prof. David Chan of the Department of Educational Psycholog y embarked on a two-year project with some HK $ 4 6 0 , 0 0 0 from the Research Grants Council in November 1997, to study the educational and emotional needs of gifted students in Hong Kong. The underlying aim of th e project was to build a sound knowledge base o n which an appropriate education and development plan for gifted students can be designed. Other members of the research team included Prof. Cheung Ping-chung, Prof. Cheng Pui-wan, and Ms. Patricia Yeung Pik-wah from the Faculty of Education. 32
