It was Prof. M u n K i n- c h o k f r o m t he U n i v e r s i t y 's t h en D e p a r t m e nt of M a r k e t i n g a n d International Business w h o initiated t r a i n i ng activities of all k i n ds fo r ma i n l a n d institutions, r a n g i ng i n theme f r om personal n e t w o r k i ng to economic systems. Hosting Training on the Mainland A s early as 1980, Prof. M u n a nd three teachers f r om his faculty led 25 students to Z h o n g s h an U n i v e r s i ty to p e r f o rm a case study demonstratio n for its teachers. I n the e n s u i n g years, he a n d d i f f e r e nt teachers organized training courses for government a n d n o n - g o v e r n m e nt i n s t i t u t i o n s i n Guangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Beijing. I n 1981, he was i n v i t ed b y the People's Bank of China to give lectures on marketing to teachers f r om 23 finance a nd economics institutes all over the country. H e also gave lectures to staf f of the M i n i s t ry of Foreign E c o n om i c Relation s a n d Trade, a n d the M i n i s t r y of Ma c h i n e - b u i l d i ng I n d u s t r y i n Guangzhou. Training Programmes in Hong Kong As i m p o r t a nd e x po rt trade b o ome d, t h e C h i n a N a t i o n a l M a c h i n e r y a n d Eq u i pme nt I mp o rt and Export Corporation u n d er the M i n i s t r y of Ma c h i n e - b u i l d i ng I n d u s t r y set u p t r a d i n g c o m p a n i es overseas. Their executives needed to k n ow m o r e a b o ut t he w o r k i n g s of a m a r k e t economy. M r . Jia Q i n g l i n, the c omp a n y 's general manager a nd current secretary of the Be i j i ng M u n i c i p a l Pa r ty C omm i t t e e, i n v i t e d T he Chinese U n i v e r s i ty to t r a i n these business executives. For 10 years f r o m 1981, the c o r p o r a t i on h a d been sending 50 executive s to C U H K for t r a i n i ng f r om M a y to July each year. The task wa s taken over i n 1992 b y the Un i v e r i s t y 's School of C o n t i n u i ng Studies. Besides the M i n i s t ry of Machine-building Industry, the University also p r o v i d ed training services for the M i n i s t ry of Metallurgical Industry. F r o m the 80s to th e early 90s w h e n Prof. M u n was dean of business a dm i n i s t r a t i o n, he arranged for academics f r om all over the ma i n l a nd to visit C U H K to observe the teaching of business studies. I n 1982, the faculty organized a seminar o n enterprise management i n Ch i na jointly w i t h the Institute of Industrial Economics of th e Chinese A c a d em y of Social Sciences. The f u n c t i on has since been hosted alternately i n H o n g K o n g a nd the ma i n l a nd on a yearly basis.
