council also assists y o u ng people i n cultivating the right attitude towards life, in coping w i t h the challenges of the time, and i n meeting the demands of society. G i v en his great learning and hig h morals, Mr. H u n g is eminently suited to th e appointment. Mr. H u n g was a member of the second graduating class at Ch u ng Chi College , and over the years he has s h own great love for his alma mater. D u r i ng the early day s of the college, classes were held at the hall of St John's Cathedral an d St Paul's Co-educational College, and later at leased premises at 147 Caine Road and at the Bishop Hoar e Memo r i al Building. Students were required to move f r om one place to anothe r between classes, up and d ow n Caine Road, and that was an arduous undertaking. Th e Chung Chi campus today, of course, is very different, as it stand s proud, magnificent and well equipped, commanding a scenic v i ew of both Ma On Shan an d Tolo Harbour. Du r i ng its long road f r om penury to magnificence and f r om obscurity to fame, Mr. H u n g has always stoo d b y the college, and his great interest i n its affairs actually began in his student days. He was electe d to the college board of trustees as early as 1973, became it s treasurer in 1987, and has been chairma n since 1993. A l l these years he journeyed w i t h the college as it went from strength to strength, lending his helping hand wherever he could to improve facilities , b u i ld the college's image, promote the Ch u ng Chi spirit and enhance its academic status. In these he has wo r k ed closely w i t h the college head, teachers and students. Indeed, Mr. Hung's relationship w i t h the college, wh i ch has laste d for close to half a century, i s amazing, and very touching too. Since its early days Chun g Chi College has upheld the principles of 'Sublime is Lov e for All, Fundamental is Nurture of Talent'. It has also followed th e Christian teachings o f justice, peace and charity. These p r i n c i p l es have p r o v i d ed for a holistic edu c a t i o n i n w h i c h knowledge and ethics are equally emphasized. I n a free academic environment, students have learnt to develop a deep understanding of both traditional and moder n wo r ld orders, as well as Chinese and western cultures. I n recent years the college has directed mu ch energy and many resources toward s the provision of mor e balanced and multifarious opportunities for education, to wh i ch end special efforts hav e been made to expand and enhance its liaison w i t h mainland and overseas institutions. Student activitie s that serve this purpos e include student visitor programmes, languag e enhancement programmes, leadership t r a i n i ng p r o g r amme s, i n f o r ma t i on t e c hno l ogy t r a i n i ng p r o g r amme s, q u a l i ty a c t i v i ty a w a rd programmes, o u t wa rd b o u nd t r a i n i ng programmes and mentor programmes . A l l these activities have met w i t h the enthusiasti c support of Mr. Hung. A t this point in time Chung Chi is actively engaged i n a series of events ma r k i ng its 50th anniversary, and Mr. Hung, as the chairman of the college boar d of trustees, took personal c ommand of the celebration activities despite hi s already heavy schedule. This is a fact tha t amp l y demonstrates his selfless devotion to his alma mater. Mr. H u n g also plays an active role i n church wo r k, i n the promotion of medical services, and i n the furtherance of economi c activities. Since the 1970s he has been a member of the No r th Point Methodist Church Council and has been vice-chairman since 1999. I n 199 1 he was appointed to the Hospital Governing Committee for the Alice Ho M i u L i ng Nethersole Hospital and was on the Hospital Governing Committee for the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital f r o m 1993 to 1997. He was chairman of the Ch u ng Chi College A l u m n i Association f r om 1976 to 1978, and chairman of the Chinese Christian Universities A l umni Association of Hong Kong f r o m 1980 to 1981.
