University Members Honoured • Prof. T h oma s C.W. M a k , professor of c hem i s t r y, ha s been elected a memb er of the Chinese A c a d emy of Sciences. P r o f. M a k o b t a i n ed h is B.Sc. a n d P h . D . d e g r e es i n 1960 a n d 1963 r e s p e c t i v e ly f r o m t he U n i v e r s i ty of B r i t i s h C o l u m b i a. H e s u b s e q u e n t l y w o r k e d as a N A S A Research Associat e i n the C r y s t a l l o g r a p hy De p a r t me nt of the Un i v e r s i ty of Pittsburgh, a nd t h en as assistant professor of c h em i s t ry at the Un i v e r s i t y of Western Ontario. H e j o i n e d T h e C h i n e se U n i v e r s i t y as lecturer i n c hem i s t ry i n 1969, a nd was p r omo t e d to chair professor i n 1982. Prof. M a k has p u b l i s h ed over 800 papers i n internationa l journals, a n d as the p r i n c i p al author of 333 of them. H e has m a d e m a n y c o n t r i b u t i o ns to the p r o m o t i o n of a c a d e m ic e x c h a n ge b e t w e e n H o n g K o n g a n d m a i n l a n d Ch i na a n d to the n u r t u r i ng of y o u n g researchers i n China. He was awa r d ed a N a t i o n a l N a t u r a l Science A w a r d , Class I I I , f o r h i s w o r k o n c h em i c al c r y s t a l l og r aph y i n 1995. 55
