Prof. Charles K. Kao Speech at the 35th Congregation for the Conferment of First an d Higher Degrees on 10th December 1987 ‘ ...the required talent for this modern society is not necessarily one that is an expert in a narro w area or one that can improve a narrow technological discipline and make progress in certain specific direction. He should be a person who has a clear understanding of h ow technology is progressing and what the influence can be. This broad generalist must also have a certain expertise in specific areas as his foundation, and also mor e importantly, hav e a critical and analytical mind so that he can move in and out of different areas and see theinter-connectionsnaturally.’ His Excellency Chancellor of the University, Sir David Wilson Speech at the 25th anniversary dinner of the University on 7th October 1988 ‘ Universities are more than institutes o f learning.... a university should also provide an opportunity fo r personal development, so that young people go out into the world wit h the ability to make the best use of wha t they have learnt. I k n ow that this university, with its magnificent location, has always placed great importance on these broader perspectives. 2 0 Chinese University Bulletin Autumn • Winter 2002
