N i n t h N a t i o n al C o mm i t t ee of the Chinese People's Po l i t i c al Consultative Conference, membership on the Selection Committee for the First Government of the H o n g Ko ng Special Administrative Region, chairmanship of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals in 1981/ 82, a directorship of the H o n g K o ng Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association, and the chairmanship of the Federation of H o n g K o n g H o t el Ow n e rs a nd the Ch i na Association (HK) for Science and Society. He has also been the F o u n d i ng President of the H o n g Ko n g - Gu a n g d o ng Economic Development Association, an h o n o r a ry president of the H o n g Ko n g - Sh a n g h ai E c o n om ic D e v e l o p m e n t A s s o c i a t i o n, the H o n o r a r y P r i n c i p al of W u y i University, Jiangmen, a member of the Board of Directors of Fudan U n i v e r s i t y i n S h a n g h a i, t he H o n o r a r y D e a n of B u s i n e ss A d m i n i s t r a t i on of Y a n g z h ou Un i v e r s i t y, a nd an adviser to the Chinese Economic Research Centre at Peking University. Such is the r e n o wn and esteem in w h i c h he is held, and such the effect of his benevolence. D r. L u i enjoys a v e ry h a p py f am i ly life a nd celebrated the g o l d en a n n i v e r s a ry of his w e d d i n g not too l o n g ago. The five children in the L u i family are all participating i n the family business and creating their o w n success and achievements, abiding by their father's principles of self-reliance and u n y i e l d i ng diligence. Dr. L u i himself is a modest, b r o a d -m i n d ed man, and takes an interest i n music and the arts. H is residence is decorated w i t h robust pine trees and pools of s p l e n d id koi, w h i c h are r e n own ed amo ng the stately homes i n H o n g K o ng and reflective of the elegant taste of the owner. Dr. L u i Che Woo has a l wa ys g i v en his s t r o ng s u p p o rt to t e r t i a r y e d u c a t i on i n H o n g K o n g , a n d h is m u n i f i c e n ce is particularly a b u n d a nt at The Chinese Un i v e r s i ty of H o n g Kong. He has been on the Board of Trustees and the E n d o wme nt F u nd Comm i t t ee of U n i t ed College since 1995, and has sponsored the Un i v e r s i ty and the College w i t h e n o rmo us amo u n ts for v a r i o us academic purposes, i n c l u d i ng the establishment of the Dr. L u i Che Woo Scholarships to facilitate exchange programmes w i t h Cornell U n i v e r s i ty for s t u d e n ts i n the School of H o t el a nd T o u r i sm Ma n a g eme n t. In r e c o g n i t i on of the scale a nd range of his c o n t r i b u t i on to w o r t h y causes i n H o n g Ko n g, the ma i n l a nd and abroad, and his outstanding achievements w h i ch directly bear on the prosperity of H o n g Kong, Mr. Chairman, I present to y o u Dr. L u i Che Woo for the award of the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa.
