dean of the Faculty of Business Administration for three years from 1st August 2002. • Prof. Leung Yee, professor of geography and resource management, has been elected as dean of the Faculty of Social Science for three years f r om 1st Augu st 2002. Distinguished Professor-at-Large Prof. James A. Mirrlees was a p p o i n t ed D i s t i n g u i s h ed Professor-at-Large of the University f r om 1st August 2002. Prof. Mirrlees obtained his M A in mathematics and n a t u r al p h i l o s o p hy f r om Edinburgh University i n 1957 and his Ph.D. i n economics f r om Cambridge University in 1963. He has wo r k ed as Edgeworth Professor of Economics at the Un i v e r s i ty of Oxford, as professor of p o l i t i c al e c o n omy at the Un i v e r s i ty of Camb r i d g e, and as v i s i t i ng professor to M I T, UC Berkeley, a nd Yale University. He was a w a r d ed the N o b el Prize i n 1996 for his ‘ f u n d ame n t al contributions to the economic t h e o ry of incentives u n d er asymmetric information'. He has extensive k n ow l e d ge i n and p r o f o u nd influence on d e v e l o p i ng economies and his theoretical r e s e a r ch has b e en a p p l i e d to p r o j e ct a p p r a i s al a nd e c o n om ic p o l i cy i n these countries. A s D i s t i n g u i s h ed Professor-at-Large, Prof. Mirrless w i l l spend four months in a year at the University lecturing, guiding research, and promoting academic development. Emeritus Professor of Community Medicine Prof. Lee Shiu-hung was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor of Community Medicine f r om 1st Augu st 2002. Cu r r e n t ly h o n o r a ry professor i n the Department of C ommu n i ty and F am i ly Me d i c i n e, Prof. Lee j o i n ed the Me d i c al and Health Department of the H o n g K o ng Government i n 1960. He became the first Director of He a l th i n H o n g Ko ng w h e n t he D e p a r t m e nt o f H e a l t h w a s established in A p r il 1989. Prof. Lee joined The Chinese Un i v e r s i ty i n 1994, and served as professor of c ommun i ty medicine, chairman of the Department of Commun i ty and Family Me d i c i n e, a nd f o u n d i n g d i r e c t or of the School of Public Health, whose establishment he initiated. F r om 1994 to 2001, he helped i n t r o d u ce p o s t g r a d u a te ma s t e r 's degree programmes in public health, epidemiology, health education, and health promotion. Professorial Appointments Professor of Nursing Prof. D a v i d Ro b e rt T h o m p s on has been a p p o i n t ed professor of n u r s i ng ( c l i n i c al n u r s i n g) at the Nethersole School of N u r s i ng f r om 3rd June 2002. Prof. Thompson has an M A i n social p o l i cy and a Ph.D. in psychology f r o m the U n i v e r s i ty of L o u g h b o r o u g h. Prior to joining the University, he was professor of nursing at the University of York, and part-time professor of nursing and d e v e l o p m e nt at the U K D e p a r t m e nt of Health between 1998 and 2000. Prof. T h omp s o n 's research focus is cardiac care a nd r e h a b i l i t a t i o n.
