New Joint MPAcc Programme Launched in Shanghai The Faculty of Business Adm i n i s t r a t i on and the Shanghai National Accounting Institute have l a u n c h ed a b r a n d n ew Ma s t er of Professional A c c o u n t a n cy P r o g r amme to meet the increasing need for a c c o u n t i ng expertise u p o n Ch i n a 's accession to the World Trade Organization. The programme, wh i ch commenced on 17th M a y 2002 at the Shanghai N a t i o n al Accounting Institute, is designed to provide on-the-job training to financial and accounting p r o f e s s i o n a l s. The S h a n g h ai N a t i o n a l Accounting Institute, set up in 2001, is directly responsible to the Ministry of Finance. The M.P.Acc. Programme is a two-year p a r t - t i me p r o g r amme. Graduates of this programme w i l l be awarded Chief Financial O f f i c er Q u a l i f y i ng Certificates f r om the Shanghai National Accounting Institute and Master of Professional Accountancy Degrees f r om The Chinese University of Ho ng Kong. Business Students Visit Top Corporations in Asia Some 230 undergraduates of the Faculty of Business A d m i n i s t r a t i on began a we e k- l o ng v i s it on 13th M a y 2002 to 40 l ead i ng c o r po r a t i on s, g o v e r nme nt agencies, a nd universities i n Tokyo, Singapore, Beijing, and Shanghai. Institutions covered include the Bank of Japan, Japan A i r l i n e s, Sony Corporation, N T T D o C oMo Inc., N o m u r a H o l d i n g s , t he N a t i o n a l U n i v e r s i t y o f Singapore, Na t i onal Computer System Pte. L t d . , L y n k B i o t e c h n o l o g i es Pte. L t d . , Tsinghua University, and Fudan University. D u r i n g their visit, the students met w i t h senior executives of the organizations. This programme is intended to provide an o p p o r t u n i ty f or s t u d e n ts to a c qu i re international exposure, understand real-life business management challenges confronting corporate leaders today, and to exchange v i ews w i t h their counterparts f r om China's top universities. US Writing Project Establishes First Asian Site at CUHK The Faculty of Education has been selected to host the first site i n Asia of the Na t i onal Wr i t i ng Project (NWP) in the US. The NWP is a network of 170 university-affiliated sites across the US w i t h select i n t e r n a t i o n al partnerships. Its mission is to i mp r o ve the teaching and learning of English i n schools by recognizing the p r i ma ry importance of teacher knowledge, expertise, and leadership. Excellent teachers share good practices by p a r t i c i p a t i n g i n the Summer Institute r un b y t he p r o j e ct a nd o t h er p r o f e s s i o n al development activities throughout the year. Entitled the WrITE Project (Writing for Integrated Teacher Education), the H o n g Kong project adapts the NWP model for the local English language teaching c ommu n i ty wh i le embracing the NWP philosophy. The adapted NWP site was set u p by the Faculty of Education w i t h a donation f r om Dr. Tien Chang Lin Technology Innovation Foundation Ltd., a nd the assistance of Prof. R i c h a rd Sterling, executive director of NWP, Prof. Da v i d Pearson, dean of the graduate school at the Un i v e r s i ty of California at Berkeley, and other scholars. 6 2 Chinese University Bulletin Autumn • Winter 2002
