The objective of the project is to develop a low-cost alternative technique of producing, p u r i f y i n g, and r e f o l d i ng recombinant BMPs to make t h em affordable to patients, especially those i n d e v e l o p i ng countries. The ultimate g o al is to d e v e l op second-generation BMP p r o d u c ts by c omb i n i ng r e c omb i n a nt BMPs w i t h an organic extract f r om a Chinese herbal medicine that w i l l enhance the effectiveness of BMPs and can be used for bone fractures or defects i n cases where BMPs alone may not be effective enough. Rare Book Room Opens at University Library T he Rare B o o k R o o m of the U n i v e r s i ty Library System was officially opened on 19th A p r i l 2002 on the t h i r d f l o or of the T in Ka Ping Bu i l d i ng after t wo years of preparation. The elegant r o om decorated i n the style o f a t r a d i t i o n al Chinese s t u d y features a Chinese rare b o ok collection consisting of over 850 classical titles i n more t h an 14,000 v o l ume s in traditional silk-stitched fascicles. They date f r om the Yuan Dynasty (1260-1368) to the end of the Qianlong period of the Q i ng D y n a s t y (1795). T he We s t e rn rare b o o k collection contains ma i n ly Western language b o o ks p u b l i s h ed b e f o re 1900, i n c l u d i n g Clavdii Galeni per gameni Ars medica, quae et ars parva by Galen (1549), Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China by Sir George Staunton (1798), and La Chine et les Chinois by Escayrac de Lauture (1877). T he t w o awardees are C h a ng N a m F u n g ( L i n g n an U n i v e r s i t y) a nd Z e n g L i s ha ( G u a n g d o ng Un i v e r s i ty of Foreign Studies). In addition, t wo other entries respectively by Leo Chan Tak-hung (Lingnan University) and Tan Zaixi (Hong Ko ng Baptist University) received honourable mention.
