A total of 4,586 degrees were conferred at the University's 60th Congregation for the C o n f e r m e nt o f Deg r ees h e l d i n t he mo r n i ng on Thursday, 4th December 2003. The total n umb er of graduates ( i n c l u d i ng hono r a ry graduates) i n 2003 was 4,742, b ut the 156 degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery were already conferred at the 59th congregation on 24th October 2003. This year, h o n o r a ry doctorates we re conferred on seven distinguished persons. They were Dr. Ra ymo nd K w o k Ping Luen, distinguished entrepreneur, leader i n Ho ng Kong's p r o p e r ty sector and v i c e - c h a i rman o f the Un i v e r s i ty Co u n c i l; Prof. the Ho n o u r a b le A r t h ur K.C. Li, Secretary for Education and Ma n p ower of the H K S AR and former vice- chancellor of C U H K ; Dr. A n t h o ny Francis Neoh, senior counsel and Chief Adviser to the China Securities Regulatory Commission; Prof. the Honourable Jao Tsung I, world-renowned scholar in Chinese and oriental studies, Wei L u n Honorary Professor of Fine Arts and Emeritus Professor of Chinese Language and Literature of C U H K ; Prof. Yu K w a n g Chung, f amous Chinese scholar, poet, and a former teacher of CUHK ; Prof. L u Yongxiang, vice-chairman of the S t a n d i ng C omm i t t ee o f the Na t i o n al People's Congress, PRC and President of the Chinese A c a d e my o f Sciences; a nd P r o f. Reinhard Selten, Nobel laureate i n economic sciences 1994 a nd Professor Eme r i t us of Economics of the University of Bonn, Germany. Their citations were written and delivered b y Prof. D a v i d Parker and Prof. Serena Jin. Prof. L u Yongxiang represented the honorary graduates to address the congregation. A t the end of the ceremony, Prof. Yu Kw a ng Ch u ng p r e s e n t ed a t r i b u te t o the U n i v e r s i ty i n celebration of its 40th anniversary. I n the afternoon, the f o ur constituent colleges, the Part-time Degree Programmes, and the Graduate School also held graduation ceremonies for their students.
