Kong Cancer Institute, the first Skin Bank in Hong Kong, and an integrated training centre for endoscopic surgery. Wi th h im at the helm, the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University introduced new diagnostics tests and treatments for cancer, and new surgical treatments for burns, performed the territory's first paediatric life- related liver transplant; the faculty also researched on and introduced advanced endoscope surgical t e c h n i q u es a nd b o ne m a r r ow t r a n s p l a nt on young children. The faculty also pioneered ‘Hong Kong F l ap' s u r ge ry and h ad many record achievements in in vitro fertilization. As Vice-Chancellor, Prof. L i devo t ed all his energy and attention to the d e v e l o p m e n t of t h e Un i ve r s i t y. First he p ut his we i ght beh i nd academic freedom and independence, and spared no effort in maintaining the University's s p i r i t and t r a d i t i on as emb o d i ed i n the U n i v e r s i ty mo t t o. A t the same t i me, he strenuously sought management efficiency and c o s t - e f f e c t i v e n e ss i n t he U n i v e r s i t y 's operations, while maintaining high standards in admission, faculty recruitment, curriculum development and assessment. He was keenly awa r e of c o m m u n i t y n e e ds a nd n ew departments and programmes launched during h i s v i c e - c h a n c e l l o r s h ip i n c l u de H o t e l Management, Chinese Medicine, Molecular Biotechnology, Language Education, Risk Management and E-Commerce. These new e n d e a v o u rs w i l l h e lp H o n g K o n g meet challenges i n the n ew k n ow l e d g e - b a s ed economy. Furthermore, w i t h the globalized economy becoming ever more tightly woven, Prof. L i sought to strengthen the University's links w i th institutions outside Hong Kong and to raise its reputation in the international arena. He believed that the University's research could only be imp r oved if it was founded u p on an efficient and effective, quality-oriented system, and w i t h that belief he greatly encouraged faculty research. He spared no effort in assisting students to improve their Chinese and English. Through improvements to General Education programmes and college life, and strengthened ethical education and leadership training, he showed his commitment to p r o v i d i ng for an environment conducive to student growth. The Ch i n e se U n i v e r s i t y a c h i e v ed unprecedented results in research under Prof. Li, taking the lead among local tertiary institutions in terms of the Area of Excellence programme, in competition for Research Grants Committee funding, in outstanding research results as well as i n research student numbers. On the other hand, the management efficiency of The Chinese University also received commendation from the University Grants Committee. Prof. L i was g r e a t ly a d m i r ed as a c h a m p i on of the University's cause in the fight for public funding and coming away deservedly w i t h the largest slice of the pie. Prof. L i was also active and successful in fund-raising, bringing recognition and an additional sources of support for the University's activities. A n amb i t i o us c amp us d e v e l o pme nt programme took place during Prof. Li's term, w i t h the erection of various teaching and research buildings, planning for the teaching hotel, acquisition of the Teaching Centre at Central at the Bank of America Tower, and the s e t t i ng u p of a c o mm u n i t y c o l l e ge i n c o l l abo r a t i on w i t h outside organizations. Through six years of strenuous efforts Prof. L i has left The Chinese University an institution w h o s e a c h i e v e m e n ts are r e c o g n i z ed throughout the wo r l d. It works closely with the business sector in projects that are aimed at Hong Kong's social and economic progress, and the Un i ve r s i t y ' s confidence and pride in itself have never been higher.
