the humanities, and such a need is high on the agenda of the learned Prof. Lu. Prof. L u believes that scientists t oday should not be content w i t h merely publishing original papers or taking a leadership position i n research. Even more i mp o r t a nt are the dissemination, transfer, and application of research results. In 1997, the Chinese Academy of Sciences submitted a report on the theme of 'Addressing the age of the know l edge - based e c o n omy, and b u i l d i n g u p the national i nnova t i on system'. This report was h i gh ly regarded by the Government, and it was decided t h a t t he a c a d e my w o u l d be d e v e l o p ed i n t o t he n a t i o n a l knowledge base, think tank, and talent pool of science and technology over the next 10 years. Un d er the leadership of President Lu, the academy made incessant efforts to take on new disciplines and push new developments. I n order that China might take her rightful place i n the i n t e r n a t i o n al scientific arena, it is necessary for her to learn f r om advanced n a t i o n s, a nd also to c o n t r i b u te to t he w o r l d w i de scientific c ommun i t y. Since the c o u n t r y o p e n ed u p a n d r e f o r m e d , a c o n s i d e r a b le n u m b e r of the a c a d emy 's scientists have been visiting foreign research institutions every year, reciprocated by foreign visiting scientists also in substantial numbers. Academic partners are now found all over the world. The citation of publications in the field of nano science and t echno l ogy f r om the academy now ranks fourth in the world. These are just some of the ou t s t and i ng successes achieved by the academy under President Lu's leadership. Prof. L u is a man w i t h a broad m i nd and unsurpassed foresight. He takes a practical approach i n his wo r k, and refuses to b ow to tradition for its o wn sake. His personal motto consists of three words, 'Ideal, Diligence, and Constance'. Prof. L u has spent the best part of his life p r omo t i ng the s t udy of mechanical e n g i n e e r i n g, i n p a r t i c u l ar f l u i d p o w e r t r a n sm i s s i on and c o n t r o l, i n w h i c h h is contributions are immense. He has 20 patents to his credit i n China, Europe, and the United States. He has published over 250 important articles on scientific research and engineering education in China and abroad, as well as five monographs. His principle on force feedback of the measuring rate of two basic parameters, pressure and f l ow rate, is of p i o n e e r i ng significance. When applied to pilot-operated pressure and f l ow control components, his d i s c o v e ry has necessitated f u n d ame n t al changes to the t r ad i t i onal Freeman-Jinken principle on the control of the rate of flow, wh i ch has been i n use for over a century, and to the Vickers principle on pilot-operated type pressure control, w h i c h has also been i n application for over 40 years. His innovation has i mp r o v ed r ema r k a b ly the static and dynamic control performances for large f l ow rate and h i gh pressure control. The electro- h y d r a u l ic p r o p o r t i o n al c o n t r ol systems developed by Prof. L u have been regarded as some of the major achievements i n the field since the 1980s and are held in high esteem all o v er the w o r l d . H i s t heo r i es have been included in textbooks and technical manuals in Germany, Japan, Sweden, and many other countries. Numerous honours and awards have been presented to Prof. Lu.
