News in Brief COUNCIL NEWS Council Chairman Dr. Lee Hon-chiu Retires D r . L ee H o n - chiu, chairman of the University Council, r e t i r e d u p o n t he expiry of his term of o f f i c e o n 2 3 r d October 2003. D r . L e e h a d played an active role i n t he d e v e l o p m e nt of C U H K since assuming office as Coun c il chairman i n 1997. He w o r k e d c l o s e ly w i t h t he University's vice-chancellor to implement ma n a g eme nt e f f i c i e n cy r e v i e ws a nd i mp r o ve resource and financial management, the results of w h i c h were h i g h ly c omme n d ed b y the Un i v e r s i ty Gr an ts C o m m i t t e e . D u r i n g h i s t e r m , t he U n i v e r s i t y a l so e n h a n c ed q u a l i t y assurance mechanisms for its educational and research p r o g r ammes and created new infrastructure to support technology t r a n s f e r a n d d e v e l o p m e n t. I t also established a n umb er of p r o f e s s i onal schools and research institutes to meet societal needs, implemented campus-wide t r a i n i ng i n i n f o r ma t i on technology and w e b - b a s ed l e a r n i n g, a n d a c h i e v ed excellent results i n the r e c r u i t me nt of outstanding academics, the enrolment of h i g h q u a l i ty students, and b i d d i ng for UGC grants to s u p p o rt edu c a t i on and research ac t i v i t i es. Several academic buildings and a state-of-the-art concert hall w e r e e r e c t ed, t he c o n s t r u c t i on of a teaching hotel was started, and substantial donations were raised. Dr. Lee also l e d a r e v i ew of t he University's governance and management structure, a s t u dy of the v i a b i l i ty and feasibility of institutional integration, and the search of a new vice-chancellor for the University. C U HK is most grateful to Dr. Lee for his remarkable contribution and support throughout the years, and is most gratified to note that after his retirement, Dr. Lee w i l l c on t i nue to be associated closely w i t h C U H K as a Life Member of the Council.
