Prof. Poon joined CUHK as lecturer i n s u r g e ry i n 1986, b e c om i ng s en i or l e c t u r er i n 1992, Professor I I i n 1997, and Professor I i n 1999. He is honorary consultant to No r th District Hospital and honorary adviser to Alice Ho M i u Ling Nethersole Hospital. He ob t a i ned his M.B. Ch.B. f r om Glasgow University Medical School i n 1978, his FRCS (Glasgow) i n 1983, and his F H K AM i n 1993. Prof. Poon's research interests include hyponatraemia i n neurosurgical patients, clinical and experimental aspects of head i n j u r y, neurovascular i n t e r v e n t i o n al t h e r a p y, n e u r o o n c o l o g y, a nd telemedicine i n neurosurgical practice. • Prof. Yeung C h u n g - k w o ng has been appointed professor of surgery f r om 1st October 2003. Prof. Yeung began his career as a full- time paediatric surgeon i n Hong Kong soon after the completion of his general su r g i cal t r a i n i ng and obtaining his fellowship from the Royal Colleges of S u r g e o n s o f E d i n b u r g h a n d Glasgow i n 1985. He then proceeded to wo rk overseas i n London, first i n the Liver Transplantation Un it i n K i ng 's Co l l ege H o s p i t a l, a nd later i n the Department of Paediatric Urology i n the Hospital for Sick Children from 1989 to 1992. Upon his return from the UK in 1993, he set up a comprehensive paediatric urology programme i n the Prince of Wales Hospital and also helped to establish Hong Ko n g 's f i r st paed i a t r ic l i v er transplantation programme. He received his M D from The Chinese University i n 1995. Prof. Yeung has special research interest i n paediatric urology, children continence care, and paediatric minimally invasive surgery. RGC Research Grants for 2003-4 A t o t al of 176 research p r o p o s a ls submitted by academic and research staff of t he U n i v e r s i t y h a ve b e en a w a r d ed earmarked grants totalling HK$111,652,000 from the Research Grants Council (RGC) this year. The University also received a direct allocation of HK$15.5 m i l l i on to finance small projects, and a total of HK$3,307,800 for five SARS-related research projects. For 2003-4, the government has made available some HK$462.3 million for selected research proposals submitted by academic and research personnel i n the UGC-funded tertiary institutions, and HK$75 million for direct allocation to the institutions to finance small projects. The government has also allocated HK$10 m i l l i on as special project grants to support research w o r k directly related to SARS.
