Mentorship Programme Kicksoff Over a hund r ed mentors and mentees participated i n the launch of N ew Asia's Mentorship Programme 2003, wh i ch took place o n 25th October at Yun Chi Hsien, New Asia College. The function began w i t h a welcoming speech by Prof. Hen ry Wong, head of the college, f o l l owed by words of encouragement by Mr. Tam Ying-si, president of the college's a l u m n i association. Special thanks were given to the mentors and also to Ha ng Seng Bank for its support of the programme i n the last three years. United's 47th Anniversary U n i t e d Co l l ege celebrated i ts 47 th anniversary on 17th October 2003 at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Officiating at the ce r emony we re M r . S h um Cho i - sang, chairman of the Un i t ed College Board of Trustees, and Dr. Sarah Liao, Secretary for the Environment, Transport, and Works of the HKSAR. After the ceremony, a college birthday pa r ty was h e ld o n the college campus, f e a t u r i ng a l i o n dance b y the college Chinese Ma r t i a l A r t s Society a nd the c u t t i ng of a 4 0 - p o u nd b i r t h d ay cake donated by the college staff association. Exhibitions Art Museum Exhibitions • Rustic Images: Shiwan Ware f r om the Eryi Caotang Collection took place from 23rd Augu st to 16th November 2003. Shiwan kilns of Foshan produced the best k nown pottery sculptures and architectural elements i n the Guangdong region. Mr. Leung Yee, f ound i ng president of the I n t e r n a t i o n al Sh i wan Po t t e ry As s o c i a t i o n, has e n t r u s t ed the A r t Mu s eum w i t h his precious collection to be staged i n this exhibition. There were 180 e x h i b i ts a nd a c a t a l o g ue was published. • Enjoyments of a Scholar — Professor Jao Tsang-I at CUHK was held f r om 2nd December 2003 to 29th February 2004. The e x h i b i t i on is o r g a n i z ed i n honour of Prof. Jao Tsung-I, who was c o n f e r r ed the degree of Do c t or of L i t e r a t u r e , honoris causa, at t he University's 60th Congregation on 4th December 2003. On display were his pa i n t i ngs and c a l l i g r aph y, personal co l l ec t i on of f i ne w o r k s of art, and treatises on subjects of his specialization. Life-Architecture The D e p a r t m e nt of A r c h i t e c t u re o r g a n i z e d i t s M . A r c h . g r a d u a t i on exhibition 'Life-Architecture' f r om 15th to 18th Ma y 2003 i n Pao's Ga l l e r y, H o n g Kong Arts Centre. Fruit Fly Drosophila — Using Fruit Fly to Study Human Diseases The Department of Biochemistry staged a popular science exhibition w i t h the theme 'Fruit Fly Drosophila — Using Fruit Fly to Study H u m a n Diseases' i n collaboration w i th the Hong Kong Science Museum, from 10th June to end of Au g u st 2003, o n the second floor of the Science Museum. Obituary D r. C l a rk Ke r r, life memb er of the University Council and president emeritus of the Un i v e r s i ty of Ca l i f o r n i a, passed way on 1st December 2003. He was 92. Dr. Ke r r 's l ong association w i t h the University dates back to 1964 when he was a p p o i n t ed o v e r s eas m e m b e r of t he University Council.
