May I, first of all, thank you all for coming to this ceremony, and say how very grateful I am that the University has seen fit to accept m y donation of Dr. C.M. Li's statue. It is a very small token of m y deep gratitude to this great institution, to which I have dedicated m y entire working life during almost four decades, and which in turn has given me so much: a long, satisfying career, personal growth in many ways, and now, also the freedom for other pursuits which have always been dear to m y heart. Today I am indeed greatly honoured, as well as deeply moved, by such an unusual gathering of the University community. Let me, therefore, avail myself of this rare opportunity to say 'Thank You' to you all, m y dear friends and colleagues, especially the five vice-chancellors here in front of me, all of w h o m I have the honour of serving, although each in a different way; and particularly Ambrose, a good and great friend, who has done so much to make the idea of this statue come true; and then, of course, also m y colleagues at both the Secretariat and the ICS, who had all given me such wonderful and loyal support over the years, and made a success of our many tasks, projects and plans. To all of you, from the bottom of m y heart, may I say'ThankYou'. But, of course, wha t all of us have gathered here for, is to say ‘Thank You' to Dr. C.M. Li, the Founding Vice-Chancellor of the University as well as the Founding Director of this Institute. To some of us, it seems only yesterday when C.M. was standing here, at this very spot, unveiling the commemorative plaque for this Institute, which bears his own calligraphy and is now standing over there by the entrance; together with him was Mr. Harold Lee, whose family has been suc h a stalwart in support of the University ever since (or even before) its founding, and was also the donor of this very Institute Building. Then, a few years later, on another sunny day and at the sam e spot, Dr. Li would be showing off the Institute 永誌魄力恢宏的開創者 3 5
