Mirrlees, Dr. William Mong - Man-wai, Prof. Kenneth Young, pro-vice-chancellor, and Prof. Jack C.Y Cheng, pro-vice-chancellor A t the 61st congregation, 5,030 degrees, i n c l ud i ng f our hono r a ry degrees, were conferred.The four distinguished persons receiving honorary degrees were Prof. Lao Yung - wei (Lao Sze-kwang), r enowned philosopher, professor of ph i l osophy at Hua f an University, Taiwan, and academician of Academia Sinica; Mr. Yang L i we i, the Chinese astronaut w h o commanded China's first manned space flight; Prof. Sir James A . Mirrlees, N o b e l l a u r e a t e i n e c o n o m i cs 1996, a n d d i s t i ngu i shed professor-at-large of the Chinese U n i v e r s i t y; and Dr. W i l l i am M o n g M a n - w a i, chairman and senior managing director of the Shun H i n g Group. Prof. Lao was conferred the degree of Doctor of Literature, honoris causa. Mr. Yang received the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa. A n d Prof. Mi r r l ees and Dr. M o n g were each awa r ded the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa. The citations of the four hono r a ry graduates were w r i t t en and delivered by Prof. Serena Jin of the Department of Translation and Prof. Dav id Parker of the Department of English. Prof. Mirrlees addressed the congregation on behalf of the honorary graduates. The g r a d u a t i on ce r emon i es of the f o u r colleges a nd the p a r t - t i me degree programmes for first degree graduates took place i n the afternoon. Officiating at these ceremonies were the college heads and Prof. L i u Pak-wai, pro-vice-chancellor. Ms. L i na Yan, Prof. Lo Wai-luen, Mr. A l f r ed W.K.
