I n 1996 an impo r t ant donation was made to Sidney Sussex College at Cambridge University for the construction of a mu l t i - p u r p o se b u i l d i n g ; t he W i l l i a m M . W. M o n g B u i l d i ng became the f i r st b u i l d i ng at Camb r i d ge Un i v e r s i ty n amed after an Asian. I n r e c o g n i t i on of h i s e f f o r t s i n p r omo t i ng bilateral trade between H o n g K o n g a n d J apan, t he l a te E m p e r o r H i r o h i to bes t owed u p o n Dr. M o n g the Japanese O r d er of the Sacred Treasure, Go ld Rays w i t h Rosette, i n 1988. I n 1994 the Comite de France presented h i m w i t h t he G o l d C u p A w a r d . Dr. M o n g is a Council Member or Hono r a ry Committee Memb er of ma n y l ocal and ma i n l a nd universities, and a recipient of hono r a ry d o c t o r a t e s f r o m t h e H o n g K o n g Polytechnic University, the University of H o n g Kong, the City University of H o n g Kong, and the Op en Un i ve r s i ty of H o n g K o n g . H e a l so h o l d s c o n s u l t a n t professorships at Peking Un i ve r s i ty and Ts i nghua Un i v e r s i t y, and an h o n o r a ry f e l l ows h ip of Sidney Sussex College at C a m b r i d g e . T h e N a n j i n g P u r p l e Mo u n t a in Observatory named As t e r o id 3678 the M o n g M a n Wai Star i n 1996 for the d i s t i ngu i s hed w o r k he has done to promote economics, science, technology a nd e d u c a t i on i n Ch i n a. I n 1999 the M u n i c i p a l G o v e r n m e nt of N a n j i n g presented Dr. M o n g w i t h an h o n o r a ry citizenship as a c omme n d a t i on for h is outstanding contributions to education i n the motherland. D r . M o n g a n d t h e S h u n H i n g Education and Charity Fund have for long been staunch supporters of teaching and research at The Chinese Un i v e r s i ty of H o n g K o n g . Since t he 1960's ma j or donations have been received f r om Dr. M o n g a n d t h e F u n d t o f i n a n c e s c h o l a r s h i p s, t he e s t a b l i s h m e nt of l a b o r a t o r i e s, a n d v a r i o u s t r a i n i n g p r og r ammes at the University. The first bu i l d i ng at The Chinese University named after D r. M o n g , h o u s i ng facilities f or scientific research, opened i n 1998, wh i le the W i l l i am M .W. M o n g E n g i n e e r i ng B u i l d i n g w a s d e d i c a t ed a n d commissioned i n October this year. I n 2003 the Shun H i n g Education and Charity Fund generously endowed a professorial chair at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, this being the first chair named after an i n d i v i d u al at The Chinese University. I n 2004 the University again benefited f r om the mu n i f i c e n ce of the F u n d w i t h the establishment of the Shun H i n g Institute of A d v a n c ed En g i n e e r i n g. M r. D a v i d Mong, Chairman of the Fund and the son o f D r . W i l l i a m M o n g , p e r s o n a l l y participates i n the project as the chairman of the advisory board. W i t h a r epu t a t i on greatly respected locally and wo r l dw i d e, and a career that b e n e f i t s b o t h i n d u s t r y a n d t h e c o mm u n i t y , D r . M o n g has w o n o u r a dm i r a t i on w i t h his s p l end id efforts i n p r omo t i ng economic, educational, and c u l t u r al developments. M r .
