U n ive rs ity Members H onour ed • Prof. Lau Wan Yee Joseph, professor of surgery, has been awarded the first annual Endoscopics Award jo in tly presented by endoscop ic m ed ica l academ ic institu tions in China, the Central South U n ive rsity, academic groups and research institutions, and the academic committee of the Endoscopic M e d ic in e A c a d em ic S em in a r in September 2004. • Prof. S.T. Chang, emeritus professor of biology and director of the Centre for International Services to Mushroom B io te c h n o lo g y , was awa rded the Magnolia Silver Award by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government on 10th September 2004. • Prof. Paul K.S. Chan, professor in the Department of Microbiology, has been admitted as Fellow of The Royal College of Pathologists on 4th January 2005. • Dr. Zhou Chenxi and Dr. Chow Kin-kee, re sp e c tive ly researchers from the Epithelial Cell Biology Centre and the Department of Electronic Engineering of the Chinese University, were awarded the Young Scientist Award by the Hong Kong In s titu tio n of Science (HKIS) in recogn ition of th e ir outstanding achievements in infertility and advanced optical fibre communications research. The HKIS established the Young Scientist Award to give recognition to young scientists demonstrating great promise in the areas of life science, engineering science, and physica l/ mathematical science. This year a total of 57 candidates competed for the three awards. Dr. Zhou and Dr. Chow were winners of the life science and engineering science categories respectively. Dr. Zhou together with Zhu Hu and Fok Kin Lam, students from the Depart ment of Physiology, also won the Young Scientist Award at the International Symposium on Cell Biology — From Basic Research to Clinical Application, held from 14th to 16th October 2004 in Chongqing.
