Distinguished Professor-at-Large Prof. Andrew Yao Chi-chih, world renowned computer scientist and T u ring Awa rd w in n e r, has been appointed Distinguished Professor-at- Large o f the U n ive rsity from 3rd January 2005. Named after Alan M. Turing, the British mathematician known as the father of modem computer science, the Turing Award is w ide ly regarded as the Nobel Prize of computer science. Prof. Yao is the first Chinese scientist to receive this prestigious award. Born in Shanghai, Prof. Yao obtained his Ph.D. in physics in 1972 from Harvard University and his second Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Illinois in 1975. In 1986, he joined Princeton University as W illiam and Edna Macaleer Professor of Engineering and Applied Science. In 2004, he became a professor of computer science at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Prof. Yao is a member of the US Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of Academia Sinica in Taiwan. He was elected a foreign fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2004. Emeritus Professors P rof. Wong Chak-kuen was awarded the title of Em e r i t u s P r o f e s s o r of C o m p u t e r Sc i e n c e and E n g i n e e r i n g f r om 1 st September 2004; Prof. Lee Cheuk-yu and Prof. Yeung Yue-man were awarded the title of Emeritus Professor of Biochem istry and Emeritus P ro fe s s o r o f Ge og r a p h y respectively from 20th April 2005. P rof. Wong Chak-kuen joined the Chinese University as professor o f com pu te r science in 1995, and served as chairman of the Department of C om p u te r S c ie n ce and Engineering from 1995 to 1997. He retired from the University on 1st September 2004. PROFESSORIAL APPOINTMENTS Professor of Automation and Computer-aided Engineering P ro f. Xu Yangsheng has been appo in ted professor of automation and com pu te r-a ided engineering from 1st October 2004. Prof. Xu received his Ph .D . from the U n i v e r s i t y o f Pennsylvania in 1989. He is a fellow of the In s titu te o f E le c trica l and E le c tro n ic Engineers, the In te rn a tio n a l Eurasian Academy of Science, and the Hong Kong In s titu tion of Engineers. He jo in ed the Chinese University as associate professor in the Departm en t o f A u tom a tion and C om pu te r-A ided Engineering in 1997, becoming professor in 2000. Professor of Virology Prof. Kung Hsiang-fu has been appo in ted professor of virology at the Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases from 4th December 2004. Prof. Kung received h i s P h .
