N a m i n g a n d I n a u g u r a t i o n C e r em o n y o f N e w F a c i l i t i e s f o r E n g in e e r in g R e s e a r c h T he naming ceremony of the W illiam M.W. M ong Eng inee ring B u ild in g and the inauguration ceremony of the Shun Hing Institute of Advanced Engineering took place on campus on 25th October 2004. The engineering building is named after Dr. William M.W. Mong, chairman and senior managing director of the Shun Hing Group, in appreciation of his generous support over the last three decades for the University's academic, research, and technological develop ment. Located on central campus, the building has 13 storeys, with a total floor area of 13,862 square metres. It provides purpose-designed and state- of-the-art teaching and laboratory facilities for the Departments of Automation and Computer-Aided Engineering, Information Engineering, and Systems E n g in e e rin g and E n g in e e rin g Management. It is equipped with a multi-media lecture theatre with 243 seats. The Shun H ing Institu te of Advanced Engineering w ill spearhead advanced engineering research, create synergy w ith world-class researchers, engage in technology transfer, and promote appreciation of engineering in society through education programmes. In itia lly its research w ill be focused on two areas: biomedical engineering and multimedia technologies. Mr. David Mong, chairman of the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund, w ill chair the advisory board of the institute as its inaugural chairman. (From Left) Prof. B enjam in W. D a vid Mong; and Prof. Ching Pak-chung, director o fthe institute GIS Labo ra to ry S teps up C oope ra tion w ith US P a rtne r T he Joint Laboratory for Geoinformation Science (JLGIS) of The Chinese University and the C h inese A cadem y o f Sciences signed a le tte r o f in te n t w ith the Earth Resources Observation Systems Data Center o f the U n ite d States G e o lo g ic a l Survey (USGS) on 13th November 2004. The move is expected to enhance cooperation between these centres of excellence in the areas of remote sensing, geog raph ic in fo rm a tio n systems, in fo rm a tion technology, and data archive and management. Prof. Lin Hui, director of JLGIS, and Mr. Jay Feuquay, USGS programme coordinator for land remote sensing, represented their respective institutions to sign the letter of intent. The USGS, established in 1879, provides the US and the world w ith the science needed to make important decisions and safeguard society. The Earth Resources Observation Systems Data Center is the world's largest archive centre of aerial and satellite remote sensing data. 3 6 Chinese University Bulletin Spring • Summer 2005
