The School o f C on tinu ing Studies Celebrates 40 th Ann ive rsa ry T he School of Continuing Studies (SCS) of the Chinese University is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The opening ceremony was held on 12th March 2005 and followed by a series of celebratory events. Embarking on the journey of its fifth decade, SCS has adopted 'Life-long Learning for Life-long Success' as its motto to further its commitment to life- long education. CUHK teams up w ith microsoft T he M icrosoft-CUHK Joint Laboratory for Human-Centric Computing and Interface Technologies was inaugurated at the University on 4th May 2005. O fficiating guests included Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, vice-chancellor of the U niversity, Dr. Hon Hsiao-wuen, assistant managing director of Microsoft Research Asia, Prof. Andrew Yao, Turing Award w inner and distinguished professor-at-large of the University, and Prof. Peter Yum, dean of the CUHK Faculty of Engineering. CUHK and Microsoft Research Asia have had a long -s tand ing academ ic and research relationship. The founding of the joint laboratory w ill further draw upon the research strengths of both to develop innovative human-centric computing and interface technologies that improve the quality of life. The laboratory w ill strive to p romote co lla bo ra tion between academia and the informa tion technology industry, provide leading research infrastructure, and nurture talent. D r. H on Hsiao-wuen (left) and Prof. Lawrence Lau C U H K Aw a rd e d N IH G ra n t fo r A n tica n ce r Bo tan ica l Research Centre T he Institute of Chinese Medicine (ICM) of the Chinese University has been awarded a sponsorship by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA, to establish a Research Centre for Botanical Immuno-modulators in collaboration with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York, a world-renowned centre for cancer treatment and research supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and linked w ith Columbia University and Cornell University.
