S tuden t Achievements CUHK Student Wins Gold at Hang Lung Mathematics Awards Five students of the Chinese University were w inners of the gold award, the bronze award, and honorary mention of this year's Hang Lung Mathematics Awards, organized jointly by Hang Lung Properties, the Institute o f M a th em a tica l Sciences, and the D ep a rtm en t o f M a th em a tics o f the University. Participating teams had to choose their own research topics, submit written reports, and give oral presentations to a panel of world-renowned mathematicians headed by Prof. Yau Shing Tung, distinguished professor-at-large of the University. Edward Fan (left 1), a first-year student at the CUHK Department of Mathematics, was the winner of the gold award. Edward had entered the competition on his own and defeated over 90 teams in Hong Kong to become the champion. The bronze award went to a team comprising Lau Hoi Kwan and Yeung Shek of the Department of Physics and Ho Man Kit of the School of Accountancy. Ma Chit of the Department of Mathematics received an honorary mention. BBA Team Placed Second in International Competition The Chinese University's BBA team was first- runners-up in the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) Case Competition, the most important international case competition in Europe, held in Denmark on 4th March 2005. This year the competition drew teams from 12 internationally renowned business schools from the world over. Contestants were asked to draft a proposal for the global power giant Schneider Electric to market its Intelligent House Concept (IHC) system in Northern Europe within 32 hours. The adjudicators were impressed by the presentation of the CUHK team. This is the second year that CUHK has p a r t i c i p a t e d in t he CBS Case Competition. Only teams in the top three can participate in the competition of the following year.
