New Institute ■ Li Ka Sh i ng I nst it ut e o f He a l t h Sciences The Li Ka Shing Foundation has donated HK$60 million to the University to establish an institute of health sciences and to fund clinical studies and health science research at the Faculty of Medicine. The Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences w ill devote its research effort mainly to areas related to the health of individuals, with particular emphasis on sickness prevention, clinical sciences and regenerative medicine. Research foci w ill include early detection of severe diseases such as cancers, genetic diseases, common urban health problems and infectious diseases, innovative therapeutics and disease prevention through understanding of genetic susceptibility. The institute w ill seek multi-disciplinary collaboration with private and public partners in research projects related to personal health and health education. The institute w ill be headed by Prof. Fok Tai-fai, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and w ill be housed in a new 12- storey building at the Prince of Wales Hospital. The building is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2006. The new building w ill be named after Dr. Li Ka Shing in recognition of his contribution. A n artist's impression o f the L i K a Shing Medical Sciences Building which w ill house the L i Ka Shing Institute o fHealth Sciences upon completion in 2006 CUHK's First Course on Bone Anchored Hearing Aid The D ivision of O to rh ino la ryng o lo g y o f the Department of Surgery and the Institute of Human Communicative Research of the University jointly organized the University's inaugural Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) Course on 30th April 2005. The c ou r s e c o v e r e d t he r e p e r t o i r e of osseointegration concepts, surgical techniques, as well as potential complications and management. The course was sponsored by Entific Medical Systems SE. Besides attending lectures, the 28 participants had the chance to learn first-hand about the unique BAHA experiences of four very different clients.
