Lectures Wei Lun Lectures • Prof. Gordon Richardson, KPMG Professor of Accounting, the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, delivered a p ub lic lecture en titled ‘ Review of the Academ ic Accoun ting Literature Linking Corporate Governance to Aggressive External Reporting Behaviour' on 7th December 2004. • Prof. Jaap Valk, professor of radiology and neuroradiology of Free University Hospital, Amsterdam, delivered a lecture en titled ‘Magnetic Resonance in Dementia' on 10th December 2004. • Prof. Thomas M. Scanlon, Jr., Alford Professor of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy and Civil Polity, Harvard University, delivered a public lecture entitled ‘When Does Equality Matter?' on 14th March 2005. O ther Lectures • Prof. Christopher Cullen, d irecto r of the Needham Research Institu te of the UK, delivered a public lecture on ‘ Building Cross- cultural Bridges Through Translation: The Case of Mathematics' in his capacity as Wilson T.S. Wang — New Method College V is itin g Professor in Language Education on 17th November 2004. • The Chinese University Press held a lecture entitled ‘Gao Xingjian: Archive, Literature, and Theatre' on 11th December 2004. Speakers included Prof. Gilbert Fong of the Department of Translation, Prof. Tam Kwok-kan of the Department of English, Dr. Colin Storey, the U nive rsity Librarian, and Mr. Jim Chim, associate artistic director of Theatre Ensemble. • Former US Secretary of Defence Dr. William J. Perry delivered a lecture on ‘Technology and Globalization' on 14th January 2005. • Prof. Andrew Yao Chi-chih, distinguished professor-at-large of the University, delivered a lecture on ‘Future Challenges of Computer Science' on 25th January 2005. • Prof. Amartya Kumar Sen, Nobel laureate in economic sciences 1998, and Prof. David J. Gross, Nobel laureate in physics 2004, delivered lectures entitled ‘Global Causes of Violence' and ‘The Coming Revolutions in Fundamental Physics' on 18th February 2005 respectively. • Mr. James Keith, Consul General of the United States of America in Hong Kong, give a lecture titled ‘The WTO and Beyond: Building on Hong Kong's Strengths' on 7th March 2005. • Prof. Joseph E. S tiglitz, Nobel laureate in econom ic sciences 2001, gave a lecture entitled ‘ China and the G lobal Economy: Challenges, Opportunities, Responsibilities' on 16th March 2005 . O b itua ries • The University records w ith deep sadness the passing away of Prof. Joseph S.C. Fu, former director of studies in chemistry and dean of the Faculty of Science, on 11th March 2005 in New Jersey, USA. He was 79. • Mrs. Pamela Lee, former senior sub librarian of the University Library System, passed away on 25th March 2005.
