Professor of Paediatrics Prof. N g Pak-cheung has been appointed professor of paediatrics from 1st October 2005. Prof. N g received his M D f r om the University of Leeds i n 1994. He has taught extensively i n the UK. He joined the CUHK Faculty of Medicin e in 1993 as associate p r o f e s s or i n paediatrics and honorary consultant neonatologist at th e Prince o f Wales Hospital. Professor of Mathematics Prof. Raymond Chan Hon-fu has been a p p o i n t ed professor of mathematics from 1st October 2005. Prof. Chan received his B.Sc. in mathematics f r o m The Chinese University, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University. He joined the CUHK Department of Mathematics i n 1993. He is a member of various professional societies. DONATIONS • Li Ka Shing Foundation Donates HK $ 1 0 0 Million and Grant First Chair Professorship The University has received a grant of HK$40 million f r om the L i Ka S h i ng F o u n d a t i on o n t o p of the e a r l i er commitment of HK$60 million. The HK$100 million w i l l be used to support clinical studies and research programme s in health sciences under the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine. Over 80 per cent of the grant w i l l be directed towards research focusing on integrativ e transdisciplinary science in health promotion and disease prevention, mechanisms, diagnosis, mon i t o r i ng, treatment, clinical sciences, and regenerative medicine. The balance w i l l be used to set up a Dr. Li Ka Shing Chair in the Faculty o f Medicine 一 the first chair professorship granted by the Li Ka Shing Foundation under its Chair Professorship initiative. The Universit y considers it a great honour to be the first recipient and has nominated Prof. Dennis Lo, a wo r l d - r e n own ed medica l scientist and director o f the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, to hold the chair. The Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences w i l l be housed i n the L i Ka Shing Medical Sciences Building at the Prince of Wales Hospital. Construction of the b u i l d i ng is expected to be completed by early 2007. A distinguishing f e a t u r e of the i n s t i t u te is its i n n o v a t i v e a n d interdisciplinary approach emphasizing research that translates advances i n basic and molecular science into test s and treatments that benefit patients and promot e health.
