CUHK Spearheads Programme for Holistic Education A cademics f r o m the D e p a r t me n t of Social Wo rk and the De p a r t me nt of Educational Psychology of the Un i v e r s i t y have been i n v i t ed by the H o n g K o ng Jockey C l u b Charities Trust to lead a research team to develop a multi-year u n i v e r s a l p o s i t i v e y o u t h d e v e l o p m e n t p r o g r a mm e . T he p r o g r a mm e w i l l p r o m o t e holistic adolescent development i n H o n g Kong. The HK$29.65 m i l l i o n p r o g r amme is part of the P.A.T.H.S. to A d u l t h o o d: A Jockey C l ub Yo u t h E n h a n c e m e n t S c h e m e, w i t h P . A . T . H . S . r e p r e s e n t i n g P o s i t i v e A d o l e s c e nt T r a i n i n g through Holistic Social Programmes. Th e scheme has been launched w i t h HK$400 m i l l i on f r om the Jockey Club Charities Trust. The three-year p r o g r amme , b e g i n n i n g i n 2006/07, comprises t w o tiers. Tier 1 is a universal p o s i t i v e y o u t h d e v e l o p m e n t p r o g r a m m e i n v o l v i n g students f r o m Secondary 1 to 3; tier 2 is a selective p r o g r amme p r o v i d ed to at least a f i f t h of th e s t u d e n t s of each g r a d e w h o have greater psychosocial needs. Members of the C U H K team are Prof. Daniel Shek, Prof. Patrick Lau and Prof. C.M. Lam. Three Hong Kon g School s Sho w Healt h is Gol d Three schools i n H o n g K o ng were presented the g o l d a w a r d i n the H o n g K o n g He a l t h Schools Aw a rd Scheme by the University's Centre for Health Education and Health Promotion and the E d u c a t i on a n d M a n p o w e r Bu r e a u o f the HKSAR. The schools have attained standards set by W H O and p e r f o r med excellently i n six key areas for health promoting schools. They have also assisted a partner school to develop into a healthy school i n the six key areas. The scheme encourages, t h r o u g h h e a l th p r o m o t i o n , e d u c a t i o n a l a c h i e v eme n t, better h e a l t h a n d e m o t i o n a l w e l l - b e i n g, t h e r e by helping students to i mp r o v e life quality. It is the first t e r r i t o r y - w i de healthy school s mo v eme nt recognized as me e t i ng W H O standards b y the W H O We s t e rn P a c i f ic R e g i o n a l O f f i c e. 57 p r i ma r y schools, 35 secondary schools, and 11 special schools have j o i n ed the scheme. I n the past t wo years, 27 schools were presented silver and bronze awards. This y e a r , 26 s c h o o ls w e r e presented a total of three gold, nine silver, and 14 b r o n z e a w a r d s a t a c e r e m o ny h e l d o n 6 th No v emb e r 2005. The g o l d - w i n n i ng s c h o o ls are Po L e u n g K u k F o n g W o n g K a m C h u e n P r i m a r y Sc h o ol ( p h o t o ) , S K H B i s h o p Baker Secondary School, an d Tsung Tsin College. A health s u r v e y c o n d u c t e d by the Centre indicates that the health condition, eating habits, hygiene practices, an d l i v i ng environment of preschool children i n H o n g K o n g leave mu ch to be desired. The Healthy Schools (Pre-school) Aw a rd Scheme wa s launched by the centre to promote collaboration amo n g parents, schools, and the c ommu n i t y i n b u i l d i n g a healthier future for the next generation. The H e a l t h Schools (Pre-school) A w a r d Scheme is s u p p o r t e d by the Qu a l i t y Education F u n d w i t h t he H o n g K o n g I n s t i t u t i o n o f Education ( HK I Ed) being a major collaborator. It has the endorsement of WHO ' s Western Pacific Regional Office and is the first health p r omo t i n g school mo v eme nt i n pre-school education.
