Student Achievements Ph.D. Student Honoured w i t h IEEE Graduate Student Fellowship Mable Fok Mei-po, Ph.D. student in the Department of Electronic Engineering, has been awarded a graduate student fellowship by the Laser and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS) of the Institut e of Electrical and Electronic s Engineers (IEEE) of the US. This year, onl y 12 f e l l o w s h i p s w e re awa r d e d. Ma b le was one of t w o recipients from Asia and the other recipient was f r om the U n i v e r s i ty of To k y o. The o t h er a w a r d e es included students f r om S t a n f o r d, U . C. Santa Barbara, the California I n s t i t u te of Technology, U n i v e r s i ty College London, and Technische Universit ä t Berlin. The Graduate Student Fellowship Programme was set up in 1999 to p r o v i de f e l l ows h i ps t o outstanding graduate students in electro-optics, lasers, photonics, optics and related fields. The i n t e r n a t i o n al c omp e t i t i on is open t o s t udent members of LEOS which, in 2005, number around 1,500. Mable obtained her Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Philosophy f r om th e Department of E l e c t r on ic E n g i n e e r i n g a nd is c u r r e n t ly pursuing Ph.D. studies in the same department. Under the supervision of Prof. Chester Shu , she has successfully demonstrated the generation of a m u l t i - w a v e l e n g th p u l s ed source w i t h individual channel rate operating up to 80 GHz. Her wo rk finds potentia l application in the speed enhancement of fibre communication wh i ch is the backbone of Internet traffic. CUHK Students Bag Top Awa rd in National Technological Competition Students of The Chinese University captured the Hong Kon g and Macau Cup in the 9th Challenge Cup held at Fudan University, Shanghai, f r om 19th to 23rd November 2005. The challenge cup, which pools innovative talent from all over China, is considered the premier b i a n n u al na t i ona l competition of extra-curricular t e c h n o l o g i c a l p r o j e c t s o f u n i v e r s i t y s t u d e n t s . T he U n i v e r s i ty also w o n the t op a w a r d i n t h e p r e v i o u s c omp e t i t i on h e ld i n 2003 i n Guangzhou. The University held an exhibition of the six w i n n i ng projects i n January 2006 at the Un i v e r s i ty L i b r a ry Ex h i b i t i on Hall. Of the six C U HK projects entered i n to the c ompe t i t i on, three were awa r d ed the f i r st p r i z e , n a m e l y , ‘ V i r t u a l Acupuncture V', 'Bio Diesel to Alleviate Energy Crisis', and 'A Novel Wireless Multifunctional Device for Telemonitoring of Ph y s i o l og i c al Signals'. ' Na n o Guardsman of Publi c Health' was presented w i t h the second prize, while 'Virtual Mouse' and 'The Chinese Un i v e r s i t y Plagiarism I den t i f i c a t i on Engine System (CUPIDE)' w o n third prize. 6 2 Chinese University Bulletin Autumn • Winter 200 5
