34 Chinese University Bulletin Spring · Summer 2007 C lose to a hundred top scholars and business leaders from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan took part in the Forum on Cross-Strait Economic Development on 30 and 31 March 2007 on the University campus. Initiated by the China Science Centre of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and organized by CUHK, the forum presented strategic, high-quality, sustainable and effective scientific evidence and theoretical framework for promoting rapid economic development and achieving a win-win situation in the region. The two keynote speeches were respectively delivered by Prof. Jiang Zhenghua, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, chairman of the China Science Centre of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, and honorary professor of social science at CUHK, and Dr. Vincent Siew, chairman of the Chunghua Institution for Economic Research and Cross-Strait Common Market Foundation, Taiwan. The forum covered topics including cross-strait and global economies, cross-strait scientific and technological collaboration, global perspective of economic development in Greater China, cross-strait collaboration in financial investment, in trade, and in weather, environmental protection and geographical information. The fact that the forum was held in Hong Kong reflects the territory’s important strategic location. It also highlights the University’s academic contributions to research on cross-strait economic development.
