Green Building The insulated glass units on the southern façade of the new Centralized Science Laboratories Building can control heat gain and allow visible light to pass while blocking and reflecting a certain amount of ultraviolet and infrared light. This reduces the need for air-conditioning and artificial illumination. The building also features daylight sensors and an air- conditioning system with an efficient variable air volume design. Energy Conservation (1999–2000 — 2006–07) 19 million kWh : total energy saved on CUHK campus 8,900 tonnes : equivalent of carbon dioxide reduced HK$14 million : dollars saved in utilities Examples of Energy Saving Initiatives • Campus-wide lighting retrofit with energy-saving T5 fluorescent lamps • Installation of energy-saving LED exit signs • Replacement of air-cooled chillers by water-cooled chillers • Installation of occupancy sensors in communal areas • Installation of automatic tube cleaning system for chillers • Decommissioning works of excessive/obsolete installations • Use of renewable energy • Appointment of Energy Coordinators in departments/units • Setting of indoor temperature to 25.5 ˚C • Energy Saving Incentive Scheme 14 Chinese University Bulletin
